Improving Student Achievement

I believe that all children have the ability to learn. They each learn in a different way and at different rates but they all are able to learn. I promote a variety of teaching styles. Differentiated instruction is vital for student success. I believe in exposing students to different types of learning. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is very straigt forward. First, I determine what the student already knows about the topic. Next, I use direct instruction to relay the material to the student. I teach the student exactly what they need to know...there is no guess work involved. After direct instruction, the student will practice a few questions with my assistance. Finally, the student will complete some more questions on their own. We will review the assignment and correct any missed items.

I follow Gardner's Theory of Learning Styles, students do not learn in the same way, as a tutor you must look for the approach that is right for the student. Also, working with at risk students, who have experienced failure in traditonal school settings, an educator must work on the negative beliefs of the student, including that the student sees themselves as "dumb" and " not able to learn."
