My style of teaching is one that strives to bring an overall understanding of the importance and relevance of the subject at hand. I believe children, as well as all people, learn much better and have much greater retention when they understand the bigger picture involved and understand why it is important to learn the subject at hand. I believe in relating the topics to something the pupil can understand and therefore grasp. One of my greatest teachers was a chemistry professor who was able to explain a complicated chemistry concept in terms of a McDonald's Happy Meal. It was something we all could relate to and understand. Furthermore, if I can relate why learning the particular topic is important, then I believe the child will become excited and be much more apt to retain and retell the information to others. That is my ultimate goal; I want to get children of all ages excited a ... read more

I have loved teaching and working with children and youth all my life. I worked for 4 years at Easter Seal Camp, helping with people of special needs; The YMCA, as day camp counselor, and upon entering into the ministry felt that I have been teaching children, youth, and adults for the past 40+ years. My goal is to help a person discover their gifts and potential and then help them move forward in their learning and living so they can make a contribution to society. Every experience can become a positive learning experience.
Upon completing a BS in Education (Dual Certification), I decided to go on for a MDiv in Theology. I was ordained a minister, and thus spent 40+ years teaching, counseling, and preaching. I feel that I have dedicated my whole life to teaching others. I am committed not only to religion, but enjoy teaching basic living and social skills. My wife and I have ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is seeing the progression of young students as they grow as humans and as learners. Knowing that I actually had something do with their successes at this particular time in their lives makes me feel really good about what I do. My teaching style is one that is usually calm and laid back. I always try to understand BEFORE I'm understood. Always restating their questions, and being willing to talk about things other than school every now and then helps them to become comfortable with me. In order to be effective, I have to be approachable. As a music teacher and band director, organization has always been key. Students can expect me to know right away whether they practiced or studied throughout the week or just the night before the lesson. I teach students to own their successes as well as any other outcomes. They have the ability and I simply ... read more

It has been said that no one rises to low expectations. I believe that every child CAN learn, but that the process of teaching each child must vary depending on their learning style. Tutoring gives teachers the unique advantage of having students one on one, and allows us to truly discover what methods work best for those students.
I have been teaching and tutoring students of all ages for the last ten years. Having graduated with a BA in English, I have learned much about writing and the writing process that I believe could help students at all levels. I have tutored students in English, reading, science, social studies, math, music, and French.

I am a fun teacher and enjoy tricking students into learning. I have developed games, songs, and various devices which attract attention and result in learning, regardless of whether the student even notices. I have a knack for revising sentences or instructions to captivate attention which encourages the student to answer or start writing immediately. They become known for getting dependent on doing their homework with me, but eventually I cease being an enabler once the result of our efforts start producing better grades.
I have tutored many years in Calif., but have not done so since arriving in Madison, TN. I have Canadian credentials, but the JD enabled me to quickly acquire a college position in Nashville. From an early age, growing up in a loving & driven environment, it became overwhelmingly apparent to me that, just as food & exercise nourish the physical body, education nourishes the mind, spirit, & soul. Thus far, I have earned two bachelors degrees: a BS in Spanish & a BA in Finance, which have both been a tremendous advantage in this progressive, global economy. I did not realize how qualified I was to teach/tutor until this past year when I worked with inner city youth, as a part of the NCLB program here in Metro Nashville. I worked with children from any & every ethnicity, background, & culture. While my actual title as a "tutor," has only been present about a year, I have always been a mentor, kindred spirit, & positive influence to my family, friends, & on occasion, the lonely passer-by.
Family & friends have expressed to me that my open-mindedness & clever & creative na ... read more

I love to work with children because it allows me to use my creativity. I tend to use a more kinesethic, hands-on approach in my teaching. I believe that when children are able to have the subject matter displayed to them in a 3D format, they are able to comprehend it's use in the real world. It also keeps their attention span active. For example, once when working on fractions with a student I brought in playdoh that we shaped into a pie. The child was able to create the fractions with their hands and was excited about taking pieces away and counting what was left in the pie. For me, the experience of seeing a child's eyes light up when they are finally able to comprehend something is very rewarding.
I have always had a passion for educating children. I attended two different colleges and I value the experience and skills provided by both institutions. I spent two years at the U ... read more

I have been a professional musician since 1978, teaching other musicians theory, performance etc. What can I say? I grew up in a music store! I've taught guitar, bass guitar, piano, drums and piano technology. Most of my students are now professional musicians. I don't use any techniques out of any book, each person is different and their needs are also.
My father had a piano rebuilding shop and I worked for him begining at age 12, in every aspect of piano rebuilding, regulating and tuning. Do I need to say more? Over 40 years of working on pianos is more than most piano tuners have. I don't use tuning machines, God already gave me 2 on each side of my head that work much better. I could write a long paragraph of blah blah trying to impress you but over 40 years of pianos says it all.

Teaching is a very holistic activity. I spent the last year and a half working with at-risk kids in a wilderness setting as a Counselor/Teacher. Essentially, I had 8-10 home-schooled children under my care in a therapeutic environment set up for experiential education. I quickly discovered that it is very hard to teach children without first understanding them as individuals. My goal as a tutor was and is not simply the transference of information but also the transference of self-confidence to children that, if cultivated, will last a lifetime and enable children to tackle any educational or life obstacle.
My college education was very self driven and self propelled. I received three academic scholarships throughout my college career and maintained a 3.84 GPA for the entire four years. At the close of my four years, I earned a BS is History, giving me a particularly good foundatio ... read more

Because I have an extensive background in Psychology, I have a strong understanding of the learning process, as well as many other factors that affect it. I focus on each individual child's strengths and use that to bring their weaknesses up to a higher level. Through patience and encouragement, I believe that most children can experience dramatic improvements in their abilities. I am able to explain complex ideas clearly, in simple terms that are understandable. Then I expand on what the child already understands until they have mastered the more advanced concepts. I greatly enjoy the excitement, challenge, and reward of enriching a child's life through education.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Southern Illinois University. This gives me a broad knowledge base in many educational arenas. I have tutoring experience with the program "Second Chance Saturdays" fo ... read more
