I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort. In the process of earning my BA in History (minor in Archaeology), I became familiar with a broad range of historical subjects. My certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gave me a familiarity with mathematics and statistics, as well as conventions of scientific research and reporting. My MA required a publication-ready thesis, which would not have been possible without organization and self-motivation. It is widely acknowledged that students learn in a variety of ways. My primary goal is to help the student understand the material so that it makes sense. My tutoring style involves asking lots of questions. The answers to these questions enable me to determine where the student's difficulties lie and how to address them. I don't believe that telling someone a fact or algorithm or the answer to a problem has much lasting value, so I attempt to lead the student to her or his own understanding by a series of carefully structured questions. I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. Confronting confusion and working through to develop an understanding that feels personal and thorough. My passion is making mathematics accessible. After high school I was underwhelmed by mathematics. However as I took more math in college, I realized how much I had missed in high school. As I learned more mathematics, I became determined to make it my business to find and implement better methods of educating people on mathematics in a way that does not overwhelm them, but simultaneously makes their learning experience more useful.
