Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I have a lot of experience tutoring elementary children, ages 6-11. I have a bit of experience teaching middle schoolers and high schoolers, though not as much as elementary. I am currently an Education major with a minor in history. I am also considering a degree in music and English. Generally I tutor in reading and writing. I have some in science but I'm much more in the creative arts field. Helping children get a love for learning is very important to me and I can't wait to help anyone willing to learn.

Student centered and humanistic, I seek to find the student's ways of knowing and help them to build from their own starting point. I heavily endorse active reading and listening and value discussion and project-based learning. My ultimate goal is to help students to realize that they are often capable of much more than they give themselves credit.

I have taught private music lessons since 2006. My primary instrument is piano. I have tutored English, Math and Science for the last 3 years. My students have achieved fantastic results. Although I do not teach to tests or scores of any kind, but only to the needs I see in the student, I have been amazed at how quickly t it reflects on their scores, and more importantly, on their self-confidence and motivation. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been studying education since my high school graduation in hopes of one day being the choir director at my high school.At the moment I am a student at UTEP studying bilingual elementary education and plan to receive a masters in music education after receiving my bachelors degree. I am currently a subsitute teacher and am hoping to continue helping students with their studies in the summer and weekends. In my schooland work experience I have worked with children of all grade levels and all subjects.
I am firm but like to use students life experiences and hobbies to teach them subjects. Younger students I like to teach through play due to the fact that I am a firm believer that children learn through play.

I am a published author at Haworth Press/Taylor Francis Publishers of the book Pastoral Care for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Healing the Shattered Soul. I have also been a newspaper editor and received an award from the Massachusetts Press Association in the category of Best Editorial. My teaching style is to make learning fun. I like to bring materials to the lesson that match a student's interest and still build necessary skills. My middle school students became experts at poetry and grammar with daily competitions. Practice is imperative to learning, is my theory, and the key to the success I've had with students.
After receiving my BS I taught high school English for nine years in Vermont and Massachusetts. I earned my MED in 1985 and served as an administrator at both the high school and elementary school levels. I've taught emotionally disturbed children and middle school ESL students in Santa Fe. Most recently I have been tutoring elementary students in language arts and math. For the past five years I've also tutored language arts and math to 1st grade through middle school students after school.
