A Little Bit About Me...

From teaching preschoolers how to read to teaching high school students how to survive (and enjoy!) Algebra, I find it rewarding to discover how individual students learn and then help them to succeed in their efforts. I love kids and am able to relate to different age levels and needs. I understand that every child learns differently and has unique strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to be able to teach children fundamental concepts that translate into solving specific problems. For example, I teach phonics as a base for reading so that students are able to use the concepts they have learned to sound out new words. In math courses, I not only aid in completing particular equations, but I also make sure the student understands the principles and applies them in other situations. I desire to partner with parents in helping their child achieve academic excellence.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style could be described as modified Montessorian, in an attempt to appeal to all the senses, and to affect the learning channels of each student as a unique individual. Encouragement is lavished on even the adult students, and not all errors are equally vital to correct on an immediate basis. One observing any one of my classes could feel definitely "drawn in" if so desired.
My experience in paid teaching (excluding numerous volunteer and non-paid opportunities) range from teaching Vietnamese refugee "boat-people" children (news film footage archived by Vanderbilt University) in 1975 through years of Orange County (CA) adult education in English as a Second Language to my present duties in metro Denver of teaching immigrant adults in English as a Second Language. I have been involved every year since 1975 in the work of an educator, mostly for pay, but occasionally as a volunteer, either community- or faith-based, in three states and two foreign countries. Leadership was usually demonstrated in teaching for proprietory institutions in curriculum development and in the processes of actual recruitment. In fifth-grade teaching of English language learners, my class for two semesters won the highest attendance record for 3rd-5th graders in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Each time I have taught a different age-level I have sought to accommodate myself to the learning style of that particular level, whether psychokinetic for kindergarten and preschool, audio-visual for lower elementary, or verbal-phonemic for upper-level students and adults.
