A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent graduate from the University of Florida from the College of Education with a BA in Elementary Education. I entered the ProTeach program during my junior year at UF. I have been exposed to a lot of teaching strategies and ideas that have been used in the classroom from the past until the present. I had the opportunity to use these practices in actual classrooms by developing lesson plans to teach elementary students. I have the experience of being the teacher in the classroom and working with students one-on-one with reading and math. I believe all students can learn but some need explicit strategies to be shown to them. Research shows students who fail often have less background knowledge, remember less, their attention wanders and they lack automaticity, the ability to recall basic facts. I have a tool box full of research proven strategies that work. Discovery learning is not what kids in remediation need. These kids need to be shown specific ways to organize information so they can tell what is important to learn, study skills to recall information, and ways to connect new information to their background knowledge.

A Little Bit About Me...

I really like working with children from low income families. I think each child has a different interest and way of learning. I try to discover these learning styles before I begin the tutoring process. I try to allow them to be comfortable and having fun during our sessions. Most of the time I do a lot of question/conversation responses to allow them to find the answer for themselves. I like a problem based learning style, even for the youngest of children. I not only want to teach them how to properly concur their learning material but how to find the information they need if they do not know the answer.
