A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent graduate from the University of Florida from the College of Education with a BA in Elementary Education. I entered the ProTeach program during my junior year at UF. I have been exposed to a lot of teaching strategies and ideas that have been used in the classroom from the past until the present. I had the opportunity to use these practices in actual classrooms by developing lesson plans to teach elementary students. I have the experience of being the teacher in the classroom and working with students one-on-one with reading and math. I’m currently completing my Master’s degree at the University of Florida in Elementary Education. I’m doing a full-time internship this semester in a 2nd grade classroom in Alachua County.

As a teacher trainer for the past 7 years, I have taught teachers research based instructional strategies to help struggling learners as well as applied these concepts in my own classroom. Although I primarily caught art during my 17 year career, I also was interested in ways to help students learn reading skills. I was a volunteer tutor in the 1997-98 school year for a program called Reading Rescue that used research based strategies to help below grade level readers, taught remedial summer school program one summer, and have many in service hours of CRISS training.
I believe all students can learn but some need explicit strategies to be shown to them. Research shows students who fail often have less background knowledge, remember less, their attention wanders and they lack automaticity, the ability to recall basic facts.
