A Little Bit About Me...

When I taught sailing to young kids, I used to dress up like a pirate. I have lots of energy. I know I'm doing my job right when kids start laughing. When I taught to teenagers, I kept in mind my own experiences at that age. I am a former UConn graduate (1984) with a BS in Marketing. Many of my electives were in mathematics, enabling me to work as a student tutor on campus. I have also completed coursework in anatomy and physiology. In addition to tutoring college level students I have worked with elementary and middle school children in church youth groups, assisting with bible verse memorization and reading skills,as well as staging music productions. I believe the key to good teaching is understanding the subject from the student's perspective. As a teacher, it is easy to take for granted certain assumptions and prior knowledge that a student may lack. Each student brings a unique approach and starting point to the learning experience. The teacher's job is to find that starting point and lead the student from there to a place of deeper understanding and knowledge. If a student struggles to understand something, the teacher has probably "skipped a step" somewhere, and omitted some piece of the puzzle that the student does not yet have.
