I have been teaching for 12 years. 7 of those years were at a residential treatment center. I dealt with a variety of behavior issues. I learned different teaching styles with each of my students. I have extensive experience in education in a variety of learning environments. I began my apprenticeship in academia as a peer tutor for the College of Santa Fe's Student Support Services/TRIO Program (program of academic support for first generation, low-income students and students with learning differences or physical disabilities). I tutored students in writing, biology, religion, philosophy, political science, literature, psychology, Spanish and cultural history. I worked with traditional-age college students and adult students, students with a range of learning styles, and students from diverse cultural backgrounds. My philosophy for effective education is comprised of six components creativity, character, culture, civic capacity, shared governance and student centeredness. I believe student centeredness is the trunk and the other components are the branches. Each component is connected to the other and they share common characteristics. For me teaching is about making the connection for students between the literature, writing, piece of art or media and their lives.
