Experience Summary
I have extensive experience in education in a variety of learning environments. I began my apprenticeship in academia as a peer tutor for the College of Santa Fe's Student Support Services/TRIO Program (program of academic support for first generation, low-income students and students with learning differences or physical disabilities). I tutored students in writing, biology, religion, philosophy, political science, literature, psychology, Spanish and cultural history. I worked with traditional-age college students and adult students, students with a range of learning styles, and students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
As an academic adviser and tutor coordinator for the TRIO Program and adjunct faculty in the liberal arts core, I continued to work with a diverse range of students in the classroom, in small groups, individually, and on-line adult students. I have taught writing for 16 years and have worked individually with hundreds of students to help them develop their writing skills. I also work with students on their Graduate school essays and prepare them to take the GRE.
Teaching Style
I'm passionately interested in encouraging students to find personal connections to their education, so that they are actively engaged in their own learning. Engagement is essential for meaningful education. I also try to understand what approach will work best with a particular student: what are his interests? his strengths? how does he learn best?
There are no simple formulas; but once I understand my student's interests and learning styles and have established a caring relationship, I use my experience and intuition to help him learn.
