I am a firm believer in using practical applications to textbook formulas and principles to help students understand the "meanings behind the math." However, everybody has their best learning style, and I strive to find that in those whom I have supervised (professionally) and taught in a college setting. In my opinion, it is also helpful to make learning fun - if you don't want to learn something, it will obviously be much harder to learn it! I try to find fun ways to remember important principles and definitions so that these are easier to recall during testing.
