A year ago, I had the honor of substituting as an Assistant Teacher with an amazing kindergarten teacher. I learned then that she maintains her respect and passion for her career by following this mantra: "I need to understand my students come to me in the morning having already experienced some kind of morning of their own at home. I don’t know what that morning was like, but I can tell when it’s been a bad one. I have earned a BS in Computer Science, with a very strong math minor. It would have been a double major, but third-year theoretical math stopped being fun (and computers were still fun). However, math up to and including first year calculus was both straightforward and mostly fun. I have worked with computers, systems administration and programming, since graduation, but I have lost none of the math I learned as high as high school algebra and geometry and basic calculus.
