I have been working as a para-educator for the past 8 years. I greatly enjoy my work. I have worked with students with disabilities that range form mild learning disabilities to sever, such as autism. I love watching their faces light up when they grasp the concept of what they are trying to learn. I have taken classes at Community College of Vermont towards earning my associates degree in elementary education. I have also taken classroom behaior and management classes and earned certificates for those. My GPA at Community College of VT has never been below 3.8.
I prefer to use fundations with the younger students. Learning each letter and its sound is a critical base. I also like the tapping method used with fundations. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. I believe in teaching to the student’s style of learning. If convention works use it. Picking up on a student’s interest and intergrading the educational experience is essential. In other words if a student is interested in horses, the classroom should be moved to the barn. If math is the subject in question then measuring food would be an excellent way to learn fractions. In the past I have written several programs for my sons to use to learn both math and spelling. I find the instant response from the programs was a very effective tool for them to learn.
