A Little Bit About Me...

As a recipient of higher levels of education, I know the career opportunities that such an education opens up later in life. And I am motivated to share my knowledge and inspire others to access those opportunities as well. The first thing I do is to determine the level of learning that a student is open to and start there. That helps me to adjust my teaching according to the needs of the students. I am a patient teacher and I allow the students to reach their potential through gentle guidance.
Obtaining a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering has exposed me to advanced courses of Math and Science, two subjects which have always fascinated me. I have pursued and achieved excellence in these areas all through my school years and my post graduation career as an industrial engineer has only advanced my knowledge in these areas. English language has been a strong interest of mine ... read more

I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor. Math and science has been a strong area of mine, as I was a Supplemental Instructor for a genetics course for two semesters, as well as being a Laboratory Assistant that assisted students with questions or problems during genetics laboratory. I took a course entitled "Teaching Evolution" in which students developed their own teaching styles, specifically based in the scientific disciplines.
I believe that the most effective teacher is one who guides the students to finding the correct answers. Instead of simply giving out answers, a teacher should encourage students and help them along the process for them to find out the solutions ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

While getting an Associates degree in Math, I tutored college math, algebra, physics, chemistry, & calculus. The subject I like to tutor the most is differential calculus. One young lady I tutored named Glenda Lenahan, having made an F on her first calculus test, requested that I tutor her. When she took the second test she mad a 98. I jokingly asked her what she missed! May 27, 2011, my job was eliminated. I had been helping my son with his calculus and physics and found that I still remembered much of what I knew before. So, why not tutor again!
For the subjects I tutor, my style is 'pushing a pencil'. Only a genius can handle these subjects without doing problems. Everyone else, if they want to learn the subject must do problems. Usually the problems worked are the ones with answers in the back of the book. I'm caref ... read more

I find that demonstration though example is the first step to understanding. This allows for an initial exposure to the material and plants seeds of knowledge. Adjuvant to demonstration, motivation and enthusiasm to learn the material must be taught. All the homework in the world cannot replace this! Regrettably, students often struggle due to poor instruction or vague textbooks which erode a student’s motivation. Fortunately this can be overcome with a little outside assistance. My long term goal of teaching is to foster a mature understanding of the subject matter. To master a subject it must be learned from multiple angles before the bigger picture is illuminated. Once a subject is illuminated it must be continually revisited for long-term retention.
To me education is a way of life. My academic career has been driven by a thirst for knowledge. I have earned a B.S. in Bi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel it is important for students to learn not only what the answer is to a given question, but also understand the concepts and reasoning behind the answer. With this in mind, my teaching style usually walks a student through a concept thoroughly, utilizing problems to guide understanding. I find it beneficial to first gain an perceptive of where the student is at, walk them through the concept, and discuss problems step-by-step until a solution is reached. Once the concept is grasped, I often have students walk through additional problems so the student is assured that they understand the topic. Although this is the style that I have found to be most successful, I am flexible to a student’s needs and their learning style.

I love working with students and have excellent patience and communication skills. I also like to think of creative ways to help students learn if they are not understanding. I have found that the method of facilitating rather than dictating to be a highly beneficial style of teaching. I have learned that if students construct their own learning experiences they will not only retain information longer, but they will become more confident in their own abilities.
I have experience working with a wide range of students, from K-12, as well as special needs. My specialty is microbiology, and have received a degree in cell biology from Marquette University. I have learned how to discipline myself when it comes to learning, and have been able to use that to help other students of all ages. A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of bachelor and currently a master’s candidate of a biomedical engineering program, I’ve taken courses in various departments: math, physics, engineering, and biology. One of the most important skills I learned was piecing together the techniques learned all of the classes, to solve and communicate multi-disciplinary problems. A strong basic educational core is vital for success in any field. I understand the importance of not only science and math in engineering but also English since one must effectively communicate ideas to others with different backgrounds. Studying Spanish in Mexico further diversified my abilities.
I love teaching in a hands on style in which the student not only has an algorithm of how to solve a specific problem, but has a thorough understanding of the concepts behind the algorithm. I enjoy having analogies or hands-on activities to demonstra ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I use a variety of teaching techniques to help my students apply the fundamental concepts and theories learned in the classroom to everyday life. My main goal is to encourage independent thinking and analytical reasoning to promote high order thinking skills, not just memorization. By using the techniques described, I create a logical thinker that emphasizes teamwork. Although I always stress mastery of the information, I also stress the application of the knowledge. As I stated in my opening paragraph, I use the latest state-of-the-art technologies to aid me in my quest. I believe “seeing is believing” and I use virtual learning spaces and learning management systems to achieve this goal.

A Little Bit About Me...

I pursued a double-major in piano performance and biology during college years. Even though the academic work load was extremely overwhelming, I taught tutoring sessions to other college students simply because I loved making difference in other people's lives. Due to studying piano for over 20 years, I developed a certain dedication that one should have in order to succeed in academia, and I wanted to share that with other students. I have spent many tutoring hours with high school students that are experiencing difficulties in Science and Math. I worked with college athletes that struggled to find time to study due to their busy schedule of practicing and going to school. With college students, I focused on Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Physiology.
My teaching background is mainly based on teaching piano to all age groups for the past 7 years. Teaching music to someone has req ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am well versed in math and finance, as well as writing. As a high school student, I successfully completed AP Calculus I and II, AP Physics, and AP Chemistry. I also took Calculus II for Engineers at Johns Hopkins University, as well as a variety of finance courses at Goizueta Business School. I also have excellent grammatical skills, as I am a former Editor-in-Chief of a law journal. I presently work as a law clerk, and writing for a judge is something I do every day. I'm qualified to be a Spanish tutor because I minored in Spanish at Johns Hopkins, and also studied abroad in Madrid, Spain in 2005.
I first identify the student's strengths and weaknesses, and try to come up with a way to teach the student in a way that they will understand. I believe patience is very essential to having a successful outcome with the student.

I enjoy knowing that with my help a student could be able to feel better about what they are learning in their classes. I take great satisfaction in working through a tough problem and seeing the light of understanding in a student's eyes. I aim to feel more like a friend to students than a teacher, hopefully explaining things so as to not put a lot of pressure on the student, but nontheless to enable them to learn and feel satisfied with their own work.
I am just currently finishing a BS in Biology at Mount Mary College, with a 4.0 GPA. I have had experience tutoring students in the English language for about a year and a half through a service learning program at Milwaukee Acheivers held in conjunction with my school.
