Experienced teaching students with learning differences

Students learn in a positive learning environment. Everyone is unique thus everyone has unique learning styles. I focus on the positives each student has achieved and then, together the student and I strengthen the areas that need improvements. For example, there has been a recent emphasis on time test for all math operations. Personally, I believe this is testing the student test taking skills more than their math ability. I believe this can cause test anxiety issues. As a substitute teacher, I have reviewed the results of students’ test and made custom flashcards for the few math facts they need to memorize. I put them in an envelope for them with a note to memorize one or two at a time. I suggest placing one at their placemat and the other math flashcard where brush their teeth.

A Little Bit About Me...

I obtained my BA in Social Work and have worked in that field since 1993. In 2005 I began a part time job as an Adult Education instructor for Sentinel Career Center where my primary focus was language arts/writing. I was part of the STAR reading program where I became certified to teach adults to read. In this program and as a GED instructor I have tutored many individuals of varying ages, education levels and backgrounds. A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been a tutor of sorts. I love to teach kids because of the sparkle they get in their eyes when they finally understand what they are being taught. Each child have a different learning style so I try to work with them to see what works for them. I have worked with kids who have ADD and the gifted. The greatest thing I can teach is that we can teach to create intelligence, but wisdom comes from using all that you know.
