Everybody learns differently at a seperate pace.

I am an undergrad at HACC majoring in Biology. I excel in English, math, basic human biology, environmental science, & study skills. I hope to become a high school teacher someday. I worked with students who wanted to learn conversational English. I used newspapers, magazines, BBC radio and books on tape to facilitate understanding of the language. I used specifically designed three dimensional objects to help the students understand language and form sentences; for example, a triangle was a verb, a square was a noun etc. this really helped the students understand sentence structure - they had to place the object on the picture they thought it would match until they had completed their sentence. This way of hands-on learning made a lot of sense to the students made them feel very successful.

Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I take a hands on material approach to learning/teaching. I feel that young students learn best when they can physically learn, such as through blocks/puzzles/interactive learning devices and other similar approaches. I try to let the student use their hands as much as I can to aid in their learning process. As far as writing, the best approach depends on the phases. I have always acted as an instructor and guide. I help a student develop and process ideas. In the brainstorming phase, I may help a student generate ideas by suggesting different areas and working on "thought clouds." We may also do a "free write" and then discuss the ideas that were generated. During the writing process I help guide students in the development of outlines and structure. Truthfully, there is no best strategy. The techniques depend on the students needs and learning styles.
