A Little Bit About Me...

I have a Bachelor's in Computer Science with focus on the Microsoft languages (C++, C#, ASP, dotNEt, etc.) The requirements for this degree was heavy in math. I do, however, feel better qualified in verbal and writing skills. I also have a minor in Philosophy and Theology. This ties in with my High School and middle school upbringing, having attended a Catholic middle and High school as well as the University I attended being a Baptist school. My full time job (Monday - Friday mornings) is as a programmer, so my technical knowledge is always fresh in my mind.

I find that it is best to begin by getting to know the student, introducing myself, being friendly, and maybe talking about shared interests. This normally occurs over several sessions, but is necessary to keep out the "just another teacher" perspective. While learning, it is important to build subject matter confidence. Since there are often mental blocks or preconceptions in place (particularly in math), I find it productive and beneficial to get students to understand and believe that the work is not impossible. This helps in the transition from "I can't do this." to "How do I do this?". The best way to get there is using a show-tell-do format, where I first demonstrate, talking through examples before guiding the student through examples, then finally giving the student examples to work through solo. First off i don't believe that a kid is dumb or doesn't know how to do anything. Children only know what we teach them. So if a child doesnt know how to do something it is a reflection on the teaching that he/she has had. I have never had a kids come to me and leave without learing more than they knew before they got to me. I believe in practice makes perfect, especially in math. I attended the college of The Virgin Islands (presently University of the USVI) and graduated with a Bsc in Biology in 1986. While in college I became captivated with computers and programming. As I approach my college graduation, I have realized how fortunate I am to have been given the opportunity to attend college. I understood the importance of understanding math in life early on and my Finance degree only validated that notion.
