Through the past ten years in law enforcement I have lead, instructed, and supervised many people. While serving in the military I was afforded the opportunity to attend several institutions such as the University of Chaminade, Wayland Baptist University, and the University of Phoenix. After my separation from the military I attended Central Arizona College and then transferred back to the University of Phoenix. I have experienced several different learning environments and have taken what I found to be positive and tried my best to improve on them.
I have always tried to apply a hands on approach when instructing others. I earned a teaching degree in Secondary Education in the social studies subject area, after studying at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. I have worked for ten years in education, with students as young as infants up to high school seniors, and all in between. For the past six years I have worked with ELL (english as a second language) students on the Navajo reservation and on the Mexican border at Nogales, Arizona. I have worked to bring up the reading level of these students in my social studies classes. Each individual is different. Therefore, you have to know the person first in order to apply a teaching style. Age, gender, and subject matter are some elements that influence how a person learns. Some people learn visually, some people learn by practicing, some people don't want to learn. My style varies according to the individual and what he or she likes or dislikes. My tutoring began in when I was employed with Nazareth Colleges' Partners for Learning program. This program worked with several schools in the Rochester, NY area to provide in school and after school tutoring and teaching assistance to children grades 6-12. I specialized at one school, Hope Hall in Gates, NY, where I worked with students who had a variety of learning challenges. I assisted students with subjects such as: English, Spanish, French, math, language arts, science and social studies.
