Competent Math Tutor @UNC Asheville. Have your child excel.

I like to use examples and cater my lessons to what the student needs to work on (i.e. homework, test-prep). I also differentiate my style based on whether the student learns best through audio, visual, or kinesthetic means. I am a great listener and am able to identify where the student needs help and how to best bolster their academic ability and confidence.
I am employed as a Math Tutor at a company in Asheville. Before this, I lived in Raleigh where I worked for several distinguished companies as a Math Tutor. I have taught SAT Math prep at Cary Academy during the last two summers and at Roxboro Community School where I worked primarily as a Spanish Teacher.

My comments on tutoring Geometry : I consistently made mostly "A" averages in Geometry, and understand this subject very well.

I have mentored various people since 2000, in all types of subjects, including math, science, social sciences, English, writing, literature, and other related subjects. My academic record is very strong, and I believe empowering those I work with every single time. The only pre-requisites are that you have to be willing to learn, and learn how to learn.
I like to use the Socratic method, mainly by asking questions and challenging assumptions. In addition, I like to engage those I teach, challenging them to think about what they previously have not considered. I believe in building on successes, and offering constructive criticism, where appropriate.

Coming from a family with no prior college education, I made it a point to not only graduate from a four-year university but to work as hard as I could to be the best at what I do. I accomplished what I have set out to do by graduating with a degree at both institutes I attended with a GPA above 3.0. I have tutored my younger brother for several years in the four major subjects. I also worked in high school as a teaching aid for a 4th grade class at Jefferson Elementary School and actually taught math and science to the class. As part of the Jefferson County High Science Club, I volunteered for different workshops for kids that showed them the wonders of science.
I like to accommodate to a child's personality and likes to help them to learn through distinct processes. When given the opportunity in the correct manner, children can learn most of what is put in front of them. By using ... read more

I believe that in order to teach you must be able to understand learning styles of each individual child and approach them on a case by case basis. With encouragement, commitment and proper technique I can make a significant contribution to a child's education. I feel that it is very important to help a child understand that learning is a privilege and will benefit them throughout their lives. I am confident that I can help my students discover their full potential and experience a true sense of fulfillment in doing so.

I teach on a pyramid style. It is necessary for a child to have a very well defined broad base of early skills to build upon. Any child having difficulty in 3rd grade on in reading or math must remediate the early skills to make progress towards the skills needed to advance to the next grade. I have used groupings/workshops in my classroom to both teach the lacking skills and to demonstrate to students why they are important and show how they support the grade skills being taught. Hands-on and interesting projects help to keep children interested in those basic skills.
I did substitute work January-June 1992 September 1992 taught Kindergarden at New York City Schools. This proved too far from home, and the teaching market had a glut so found other work. also took graduate course work in mostly reading. My teaching and tutoring experience began prior to completing the BA in Foreign Languages: I had been teaching and tutoring English and Latin to a few Italian students. After graduating and moving to the USA, I started tutoring Latin and Italian to American students. I have always been drawn towards languages, and I find it easy to understand not only the different grammatical principles but also the different culture each language represents. Every time I am learning or teaching languages, I find myself to be enthusiast about explaining even the smallest grammar rule, let alone the different way of thinking.
I have been working with chidlren and older students for a number of years: I started as a sport trainer and I continue as a language tutor. Every one has a different way of learning, to which has to correspond a certain way of teaching: this is extremely easy when teaching on ... read more

I have a BS in Cybernetics Engineering. As an engineer, my knowledge of math and physics is high. As a student I solved so many operations involving calculus that I memorized the formulas and used them as fast as the multiplication tables. I am a native Spanish speaker. I was trained as a language teacher by Berlitz, one of the best language centers in the world. I have a certificate in Drama. I worked for a private elementary school as a drama teacher for 2 years.
I enjoy teaching very much. I am a very patient person and more than teaching the students I like helping them figure things out by themselves. I always try to create "real life" situations for them to use the knowledge acquired instead of making them solve abstract operations.

In my experiences I have found that children learn in many different ways. Based on this I feel that individualized attention to each student makes them more successful in school, as well as, in many life experiences. Children learn by doing. With this in mind I find the best teaching style for each child. I enjoy using songs to enforce concepts in all subjects. I also enjoy having students discover and comprehend concepts on their own. I am far from a book and paper teacher, although, the concepts learned will relate to the material taught in class.
I have worked with students in all levels of elementary school through teaching as well as during my college year. Specifically I have been in classrooms of pre-k, kindergarten, third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade. I find the enthusiasm and thinking of students in upper levels very intriguing. I am a recent graduate with a Master of Science in Environmental Studies with a Conservation Biology concentration. This education has required that I become acquainted with a wide variety of subjects including mathematics and the natural sciences. This also entails having a high level of written and oral communication skills needed to bridge the gap between science, law, and policy. I have worked in the college setting as a community service coordinator and collaborated with several faculty to incorporate community service into their classroom curriculum in a wide variety of subjects.
My teaching style varies greatly depending on the needs of the student; however, I always try to meet the student first and then decide which approach will be the most effective. My teaching style is informal and friendly. I have numerous years as an AWANA teacher of children at church in addition to one year experience as a professional chemistry teacher. A prior supervisor of my teaching style said "a natural teacher that immediately puts the students at ease".
My experience starts as a chemist in the nuclear industry, then proceeding to an environmental professional in the manufacturing industry, and finally as an adjunct professor of law for a distance education university. I have worked primarily in the utility industry, with short periods of employment in the aluminum industry and semiconductor industry.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have experienced various types of teaching styles while in school. I have learned a long the way every student is different and learns in a different way. In high school and all even through college math had always been my hardest subject. My second year in college I had a math professor that had a different approach to teaching math and for the first time in my life I finally understood math! Finding the right teaching approach is the key to success!

A Little Bit About Me...

As a high school student, I was very active in extracurricular activities. I participated in the rotary club, volunteering at local soup kitchens. I was also a member of the Newspaper, Quiz Bowl, Robotics Team, soccer and baseball throughout my high school career. Through volunteering at the Boys and Girls club, I was turned out to tutoring students in Algebra and Trigonometry. I spent my Junior and Senior year tutoring students in these areas of mathematics.
I think that in today's public education system, with ever-growing class sizes some students get thrown to the wayside. These students need a more personalized learning plan that offers them head-to-head or small group discussions. I can relate to the child who remains silent because he doesn't think his question is smart enough. Subsequently, that child starts getting left behind little by little until they feel completely lo ... read more
