I have a passion for teaching but waited until I gained some "real world" experience. I found that this has helped me relate to my students since I am able to make meaningful connections to their learning.
I like to discover what my students already know about the topic and to expose any misconceptions. Brainstorming activities work well for me. I like to help define the topic in common terms, not the classic dictionary method. I use presentation, discussion, videos and hands on activities. Most of what I do is inquiry based.

Most Math books recommend teaching for about half the class and then let students work some problems in class. I find this works well, it allows questions and the class becomes interactive. I encourge questions while I am introducing a subject and find it gives me a chance to use different examples to get a poinnt across. Any assignments I give outside the classroom can be addressed in the next class.
I started teaching right out of college. Taught high school and college part time for 6 years. Left teaching for the computer business where I worked for 36 years. Retired from HP in 2001. Went back to teaching. I taught at Mount Royal Academy in Sunapee, NH for 7 years. I taught College Algebra and Pre-Calculus at River Valley Community College i Keene, presently as an Adjunct faculty member.

I find working with children rewarding. I am patent and understanding and cater to individual learning styles. I use my artistic sense to help students visually understand learning. I am a retired District Manager for Verizon. I taught High School Math for three years, then tutored high school math for four. I have recently "retired" my state certification (NH) for Secondary Education in Mathematics. I am currently an Adjunct Math Instructor at Hesser College, a division of Kaplan.
My teaching style is informal , taking the students from "where they are" to "where they should be". I have had good results tutoring and teaching students from the Middle-School through the Adult levels. My greatest satisfaction comes when math-challenged students finally "see the light".

I learned to be patient, understanding and compassionate when dealing with a student’s learning style one-on-one.
