Based on my own experience as a student and as a teacher, I feel confident when I say that what matters is not really the amount of knowledge you have but your capacity to transmit the knowledge on the given subject. Therefore, I count patience and adaptation as the most important qualities for tutoring. If you are not capable to transmit your knowledge, then there is no point on teaching! In addition, most students lack self-confidence, so I do my best to rebuild that confidence within themselves by showing them that they are capable of doing it. I consider that it's not up to the student to adapt himself to the teacher, but it's the teacher who has to adapt his teaching method to each particular student. While working on my MS at the University of Tennessee, I taught lecture and outdoor laboratory sessions for the Ornithology course, which included about 30 students. As the coordinator of the Conservation Science Internship Program at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, I am responsible for much of the training of 5-11 interns at one time.
