My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. I teach a variety of memorization techniques, but if the student understands a process or formula, memorization is often unnecessary. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. I am a very adaptable teacher--I can easily pick up on a student's needs and abilities, and work to their strengths in that way. During my undergrad studies at UWRF, I was sponsored to become a tutor in the Writing Center on campus. There was a prerequisite practicum, but it was very hands-on learning. I prefer an interactive teaching style where the student determines how much they get out of it. I generally will not give a student an answer but will help them along until they can answer the question for themselves, thus making them more independent learners.
As a tutor, I primarily held 1 on 1 appointments several days a week. I primarily tutored in all levels of chemistry from general to biochem and I also tutored in accounting due to the introductory course that I had. My work as a supplemental instructor was by far the most rewarding. My job was to attend the Nursing Chemistry lectures and to take notes and create my own worksheets based on the material. I then conducted 2 review sessions per week to help the students master the material.
