Recently, I obtained my Master's Degree in the Art of Teaching Language Arts 7-12. I have worked as a substitute, Ohio Achievement Test Tutor, and summer school teacher for the past five years. I beleive that patience and kindness are a key factor of working with students. As students are attempting to master content that is difficult, the teacher should demonstrate encouragement and patience. I also believe students learn in different manners. My approach to tutoring is to try to be as hands-off as possible. By this I mean that I will not "fix" papers, nor will I write directly on a student's paper if it can be helped. I want to help the student in their problem areas by showing them examples of an area (thesis statement, grammar, citations)that needs improvement and then working with them so that they will know how to address the problem in the future. I also find that often tutors do their best work while acting as "sounding-boards" for their students; listening to the student (as each student has different needs)and then offering suggestions and ideas on how to approach difficulties.
