My comments on tutoring Genetics : Within the scope of general biology courses I have taught sections on genetics. I also have worked in genetic research labs.

The defining characteristic of my teaching method, whether in a classroom or tutoring individual students, is fostering a respectful and comfortable learning environment. I believe that the foundation for this environment is created by establishing small, personal connections with the student. I try to take every opportunity to get to know a student’s’ personal interests. While pursuing my Ph.D. in chemistry, I not only taught required general chemistry labs and lectures at the university I attended, I also tutored both college and high school students in various fields of math and science. I have over 7 years of tutoring experience at all levels of biology, chemistry, physics, and math. In addition to one-on-one tutoring, I tutor groups of 2-5 students. I can usually find a way to relate the material that the student is struggling with to something else that they understand. When they can make connections to more familiar things, then they can think themselves through problems more effectively. I usually achieve this by showing them how to do a problem, doing a problem or two with them, and then having them do problems on their own, only assisting when they need it.
I have always picked things up quickly, more quickly than my peers. My peers have often come to me to ask for my help in those areas.
