Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects! One of the best breaks from lab work in graduate school was teaching and tutoring! I have taught as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for three years in organic chemistry (6 semesters), teaching both in the lab and in the class. During this time, I also tutored for both Organic Chemistry I and II on the side (class or lab). I also have four years of actual organic chemistry research under my belt!

I am animated and like to use analogies and humor so the students can recall concepts we've covered. Having spent hours upon hours in the organic chemistry student help room at Ohio State, I know all the problems students normally run into. I firmly believe in a visual style of learning, which pairs well with the visual subject matter of organic chemistry.
While I initially went to graduate school to become a research scientist, my focus shifted to teaching after I found out I enjoyed it so much! I took on multiple students in one-on-one tutoring sessions every semester, and helped them to succeed in organic chemistry. College students fear organic chemistry more than most classes, but I assure you I can make it not only understandable, but pretty simple! There are a handful of basic principles (pKa, electronics, reactivity, etc.) that I use in concert with a student's homework, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a believer in learning and understanding concepts and principles of the subject being studied. Asking why and how we come to a conclusion rather than memorizing or mindlessly going through steps generates long term success. I believe that this is the best way for a student to prepare for any question or scenario that may be asked or given as well as preparing for future expansion in the subject.
I am a pre-med student at MTSU, and I will be graduating with a second degree in Science this year. I have experience tutoring grade school students in math and reading subjects. I also have experience teaching college students in science subjects. Before attending MTSU, I was a professional ballroom dancer and instructor for five years. I have experience teaching ballroom dancing to children as young as five and adults as young as 70!

All children grasp concepts in different ways and from different methods. I have gained experience on how to pin point a child's learning style and have learned how to become more effective by teaching at a child's pace and level of understanding. So, my teaching style is dependant upon the child's learning style. My goal is always to get comprehension from the student, by any way that best works for that student. I strive to gain fulfillment from getting through to a student, and educating them.

Upon graduating college, I decided to pursue a career in the banking industry. Within a few months as a personal banker, I was promoted to office manager, becoming responsible for the daily operations and profitability of the branch. My new position gave me the opportunity to instruct and lead a great team of employees and to help improve the lives of my customers—but beyond this the position was neither mentally nor emotionally stimulating. In 2006 I decided to go back to school and take the courses needed to take the MCAT and apply to medical school. I am currently working as a nurse assistant at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and in the process of applying to medical school. I hope to matriculate in August of 2009.

I have student teaching experience in physical science at the eighth grade level as well as biology at the high school level. I also have prior tutoring experience at a sylvan learning center where I tutored students in basic math, science homework support and ACT prep in science. I'm currently substitute teaching and tutoring a family of three children all in the sciences.
I believe that all children have the potential to become successful, lifelong learners. I also believe that I have the kindness and patience that's required to work one-on-one with students and help explain difficult concepts in a way that they can understand. It is very important to listen to the students and ask them where they are having trouble, and help explain the concepts slowly and clearly. I also understand how some students may feel because I, too, needed a tutor at one time in high school.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching others. Seeing a student have that “aha” moment when they finally understand a concept gives me a great feeling of accomplishment. I always try to cater to each student based upon their previous educational experiences, but no matter what, I have found that students typically learn best when using practical examples where they can see a concept in action. I am a very responsible and patient person who works hard so that my students can do their best.
As a summa cum laude college graduate and a future medical school student starting in August, I have always strived for perfection during my college education. A Little Bit About Me...

In college I was a Biochemistry lab assistant for 2 years, teaching labs, grading lab reports, and offering assistance to students in the completion of their lab reports and assignments. I also have a firm grasp of high school mathematics, especially geometry for which I earned a 104 average for the school year. Both of my parents are writers, hence I have always valued the use of proper grammar. In my professional work, I have found that using proper grammar is essential to communicating clearly and effectively.
I think learning happens best when the principle is related to a real life situation and the learner can understand the relevance and see the principle in action. When applicable, I like to use activities or examples from everyday life to highlight the prinicple being taught.

Growing up with more than five teachers in my family, I have always had a deep understanding of the importance of education and a drive to teach others. I recieved my Bachelor's in English from the University of Southern Indiana with the intention of completing a Masters and becomming an instructor at the college level. However, upon completion of my Bachelors, I immediately began teaching at Nashville State Community College as an adjunct english instructor. I then made a transition to tutoring grades K-12 for the No Child Left Behind Program. I have enjoyed working in this capacity for the program ever since I started tutoring five years ago.
The greatest benefit of teaching, to me, is seeing the look in a child's eyes when he or she finally reaches that understanding of what you are teaching them. The challenge of finding a new way to help a child reach this understanding i ... read more

As a Mad Scientist, I learned how to make learning science fun. I like to spend a session with my students learning their background and their learning style. My students have always appreciated my ability to look at problems and subjects from different angles. I like to use every day metaphors for teaching math problems and also try to teach students how to use a "process of elimination" style. For example, it is easier to identify whether or not an object is a cell phone by picking out one trait that a cell phone has and determining if the object has that trait rather than describing all the traits of the object and then determining if it is a cell phone.
While obtaining my chemistry degree at Butler, I also completed all requirements for a secondary education license with the exception of student teaching and worked as a math and science tutor with a private tutoring service ... read more

Through my work with elementary, high school, and college students, I understand the anxieties that often surround math, science, and high pressure assessments. In tutoring and in the classroom I work to develop individualized scaffolding to build the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to successfully engage the material. As a great fan of history, art, politics, and athletics, I strive to make all my sessions as interdisciplinary, dynamic, and "real-world" as possible. As a result of the above elements in my teaching strategy, my students are often engaged and successful, even beyond the time frame of the tutoring sessions.
Over the past ten years I have been a student (BS), an engineer, a teacher, and a student again (MS, PhD). My interests in education have led me from the high-need classrooms on Chicago's West side to Vanderbilt's Peabody campus to engage a PhD progra ... read more
