Statement of Teaching Experience and Philosophy I had my first teaching job as a pre-university student. I taught agriculture and helped part-time with physics. I then learned the key components of a lesson plan; the topic, the objective that addresses in measurable terms what shall be accomplished (the student shall be able to use VSEPR model to predict molecular shapes, for example), the why (the utilitarian value of what is learned) and how (the activity to be undertaken), the assessment that provides a feedback on the extent to which the objective was met and, finally, the summary and conclusions. A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate, I became a chemistry tutor for two high school students in my junior and senior years. This experience led me to return to college for post-baccalaureate work in order to receive certification in the state of Maryland for education in chemistry. Additionally, I received a physics minor which benefited me greatly when I began my educational career in Maryland teaching various levels of high school chemistry and introduction to chemistry and physics for 7 years. I’ve always enjoyed teaching others, whether I was a kid tacking up my pony and giving informal riding lessons or leading fellow undergrad students through the forests surrounding Salisbury University’s field station. In the past two years, I have discovered a passion for children. My style is to focus on the reason for a reaction so you can extrapolate what will happen with materials your have not seen before. This was the technique used when I took graduate level organic courses at Maryland.
While an undergraduate at Maryland I tutored students and helped my friends in chemistry and math. When I went to Graduate School I taught lab and two discussion sections, making sure the students understood the lecture material from the Professor. I have knowledge in general chemistry as well as extensive knowledge of Organic Chemistry. I tutored my daughter by helping her understand the underlying reasons for a reaction vs. just memorizing a huge list of organic reactions.
