I try my best to make the student figure things out on their own, by giving simple guiding questions or comments. I do not like to simply do the problems for them, as I find most people do not learn well this way. I am patient and empathetic, and I understand what it is like to approach a problem from the position of a student who is confused or unsure. I try to give them the tools to understand basic problem solving and critical thinking.
I went to school at EMU with the intention of getting a doctorate in Physics, to teach at the college level. I ended up getting a job in IT at the University, and found I enjoy this just as much. While a student, I volunteer tutored for the Society of Physics Students, and I tutor all the student employees I have when they are taking physics classes. I love teaching, and the students that I have tutored have excelled under my supervision.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher for the Washtenaw Intermediate School District, I had the privilege of working with students, age 3 to 21, who had significant cognitive impairments, and occasionally other disabilities such as autism and physically impairments. I retired in June after 32 years. My experience with students involved instruction in all areas of development, including functional academics, communication, social, community, employment, and daily living skills.
I found each day of working with my students both challenging and rewarding. I do not believe in a "one size fits all" approach to education; rather I feel that programs should be developed/adapted to meet the needs of each individual. Educators must fit the program to the child, not fit the child to the program. Whether or not a student has a disability, it seems to me that the goals are basically the same: to help our youth to dev ... read more

I feel that children learn best through rich experiences with a variety of materials. Children learn better when instruction is "hands-on" rather than listening to a teacher lecture. The most learning possible can be achieved if variety of senses and "multiple intelligences" are stimulated. Each child is different, and by working one-on-one with them, I will be able to find out what works best for each child. I believe that the point of tutoring is to help children reach their full potential and to give them a chance to succeed in school and in life.

In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. As well, I was a full time tutor and mentor for students at Pine Ridge Academy for a year while I lived in Burlington. I also teach the second grade religious school class at my temple. I am also a substitute teacher for a day school. As a student I was most drawn to the ideas of Piaget and Gardner. Their teaching philosophies made the most sense to me when it came to teaching. Piaget focused on the idea of play as learning. This may sound strange to some, but a child is always learning, no matter they are doing, due to the fact that so many experiences are totally new to them. When children stacks blocks they are exploring many scientific concepts such as balance, gravity, cause and effect and many others. When children scribble with crayons they are exploring many concepts of art and aesthetics. Gardner describes the idea of multiple intelligences. Everyone is good at some aspects of learning and less so in others. Children learn in many different ways.

A Little Bit About Me...

While at Wayne State University, I studied Geography, Urban Studies and the Italian language. When I graduated, I held a BA in Geography with minors in Urban Studies and Italian. During my education at Wayne, as I gained a good knowledge of the Italian language, I started to tutor lower-level students. In the end, I tutored Italian for one and a half years.
I am a very easy-going individual; I don't like to push too much but am encouraging. The way I think teaching Italian works best is to make associations with the English language. The two languages are so heavily intertwined, but not at face value. After learning Italian, my knowledge of English is much more profound. Tutoring is very rewarding to me and making a difference in someone's life is important.
