I have lived in Japan now for 27 years. I am planning to return to the U.S. in April. I have and am currently teaching in 23 locations with upwards of 34 classes/lessons per week. My students range in age from two to 64 years. I currently teach English conversation part-time at the International Resort College, where I have classes for future cabin attendants and airport ground staff. I also teach weekly group classes at six different Kindergarten/nursery schools. I have several private students, and small private group lessons as well. I believe making the information relevant to the student is important. I like to use humor and real-life examples to keep students engaged. I believe that it is important to know how the child learns to be able to present the material to them in the best manner for them which is what I would base my style on. I obtained Secondary Teacher Certification in Social Sciences. I taught high school and middle school Spanish for two and half years at public schools, and completed my student teaching at an alternative school for juvenile criminals. I was an at home teacher for my school district when children were out for extended periods due to illness. I have completed additional continuing education in working with gifted and special needs children. I believe that each child/adult has a learning style unique to them. Finding what works and what makes learning fun, to me, are critical to success, especially to struggling learners. Positive reinforcement and encouragement are critical, as well. My background includes teaching at the elementary level and at the adult education level, especially literacy. I spent 10 years directing an adult literacy program where I trained volunteers to be tutors and tutored myself. As a pre-service teacher, I am constantly preparing to become an excellent educator. My degree is in Elementary Education with an emphasis on Children's Studies and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). I have endorsements in language arts, science, and social sciences. Through clinical placements I have observed, tutored, and taught in two elementary classrooms. I have always loved working with children. My teaching style is friendly, and casual, but still quite demanding. I try to create a comfortable and fun tutoring environment, but within that environment I challenge my students to work past their difficulties to reach levels of achievement they may not have previously believed themselves capable of.
