Experience Summary
With my dual B.A. in History and English, I am capable of teaching a wide range of subjects in the liberal arts. My expertise is European Literature and History, specifically ancient and medieval, but I am also comfortable with the modern period. As a Teaching Assistant for college-level history courses, I was responsible for creating, administering, and grading college-level class assignments and essay exams as well as meeting with students to clarify course material, help them prepare for exams, etc. Thanks to such teaching and grading experience, I have excellent grammatical and argumentative proofreading skills. I am confident that I can foster interest in the subject material regardless of the student's personal learning style.
Teaching Style
To me, learning is best exemplified by an engaged and interested student asking informed and critical questions of the material assigned. I believe that students are more apt to achieve such education in a relaxed atmosphere. As the instructor, I may know more than the student(s), but this does not necessarily imply that I am the more insightful or intelligent person. Therefore, I encourage my student(s) to question myself and their peers, to not accept history at face value, and to not view historical study as a series of “facts” that are dictated to passive students as “truth.” My role as teacher is that of facilitator; I am there to provide the historical context and skills necessary for generating such critical assessments.
