As a tutor, I find that it is important to present the material to the students in a way that they can relate to. My job as an educator is to teach them how to learn it and make them want to learn it. I personally do not believe that negative reinforcement is beneficial. Positive responses to students are extremely valuable, even if they may occasionally give the wrong answer. This will give them the motivation to do well. My philosophy is that teaching is part knowledge, part communication, and part intuition. My intuition is necessary to understand where a student is getting stuck. I myself already understand the material; the challenge is to understand why a student does not. A variety of communicative teaching approaches is best. I have learned that different students respond to visual, auditory, or tactile methods. As always, continuous practice is extremely important. I also must ... read more

My comments on tutoring PSAT : I have tutored several students in the math section of the PSAT.

I think that I am very clear and concise in my explanations of concepts. I am also very good at explaining concepts in multiple ways. So if a student doesn't get how to do a problem using one method, I can go over another approach. I'm a good listener.
I have been teaching math since 8/2000. I first began teaching in a large urban district and then switched to teaching in a private school. I have taught math at both the high school and middle school levels. The subjects I have taught include algebra I and II, geometry, AP Calculus AB,and middle school math. Teaching should be an engaging process between both the teacher and student. When students are not only able to comprehend concepts, but to fully explain the concepts to others, true learning has occurred. My goal is to strive for true understanding and to ignite a passion for knowledge that will fuel the learners for years to come. I believe that all students can learn and education holds the key for future success in life. I facilitate the learning process through the use of differentiated instruction and Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory. I believe in the constructivist model of education and knowledge seeking which focuses on a facilitation of the learning process and allows students to construct their own learning.
I have 7 years of teaching experience in the public school system. While certified in Tennessee and Florida in the areas of the social sciences (History and ... read more

I have loved education and the process of learning since I was a child. Due to family issues, I dropped out at in the 9th grade but due to extensive reading most of my life on many subjects, and being gifted intellectually, thank God, I was enrolled in college at the age of 16. Due to my age, I lacked the discipline needed to succeed then so joined the Army at 18 and finished first in my class in their HS program. I continued going to college in the evenings an weekends until I completed my Master's degree, meanwhile raising 3 children and running a certified home daycare. I am currently a Realtor but am looking to enroll in a Doctoral program in Education. I am a "people" person as they say and get refueled helping others learn and figuring out a way for it to make sense students to overcome their barriers. I am comfortable with all subjects except the higher maths (trigonometry/ge ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Family & friends have expressed to me that my open-mindedness & clever & creative nature allow me to have an almost sixth sense-like intuition. Through the NCLB program, I put this theory to the test, & to be perfectly honest, I feel as if I lived up to this supposed “inherent capacity” to touch & better the lives of underprivileged, neglected, inner-city youth. As an educational activist, I REALLY, REALLY try to get & know each child on an individual basis. I want the child to become comfortable with me in their immediate environment: if a child cannot trust, respect, & admire his or her educator as a mentor, how can we truly expect the child to take his or her education seriously? Can we expect a progressive future if our children’s latent potential is never tapped into, & only remains dormant? I’m here to make that possibility less likely.
From an early age, growing up in a ... read more

I have six years of teaching experience. Two years of which was before I went to the university to pursue a BEd degree in mathematics. Having been trained to teach mathematics, I got myself engaged in doing that the other four years equipping my students with the knowledge of this utilitarian subject. I have good enough control on grammatical skills. I have also two years experience in tutoring. Presently, I still do home tutoring in mathematics.
Not only do I love teaching children mathematics, I am very passionate about it because without a good grasp on the subject their hold on other subjects will be shaky. Because I aim for my student to have a good foundation and be able to build on that, I have a style of using what is around the student to drive home a point. Not only do I know the philosophy of the subject matter, but I also know the psychology of it and consider it as cru ... read more

In the classroom, I believe the collaborative approach is the best method for teaching. For impactful learning to occur, students must be directly and actively involved in their learning. This can be done through group work, group activities, and class discussion. This approach is also best for tutoring. To be a good tutor, one must know how to best engage the tutee in the learning process. It is not enough to simply provide information; this can be accomplished simply by reading a book. A good tutor must put theory and knowledge into practice for the tutee to progresses as a student.

While still in high school and also during my college years, I was always helping others excel in education. Offering study sessions to elementary and junior high students helped me understand what brings out the best in each child. To earn my degree in Business Administration I had to constantly practice math and English. Taking computer classes in college and on the job training gives me first hand knowledge of computers. Making above average grades in science and social studies in school allowed me to help tutor other students while still in school. I did 3 years of volunteer study sessions for the local civic league while coaching sports with these same children.
I have learned since having children of my own that patience and understanding each child is the key to success. I take the time to listen as well as clearly explain subjects so that no question is left unanswered. ... read more

I believe that the most important characteristic that a teacher must have is consistency. The teacher must develop a system of rigorous work with ample support. I believe that it is imperative to possess an in-depth knowledge of the subject which one teaches, not just be a few pages ahead in the book. In order to achieve this high level, I prepare meticulously for each session, reach the student on his or her level and help guide them to where he or she needs to be.
I have had the opportunity to work and help develop young minds for a few years. After college, I tutored full time at a high performing urban charter school where I worked on basic remedial skills with students. I have continued to work with young people to build confidence in their skills and improve their performance in school and on tests. It has been said that no one rises to low expectations. I believe that every child CAN learn, but that the process of teaching each child must vary depending on their learning style. Tutoring gives teachers the unique advantage of having students one on one, and allows us to truly discover what methods work best for those students.
I have been teaching and tutoring students of all ages for the last ten years. Having graduated with a BA in English, I have learned much about writing and the writing process that I believe could help students at all levels. I have tutored students in English, reading, science, social studies, math, music, and French.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had experience as a teacher for 2 years. My employer was Metro Nashville public school and they certified me to teach mathematics to grades 9th through 12th. As a teacher I taught geometry at Mcgavock Comprehensive High School and algebra and geometry at Whitescreek High School.
I enjoy finding out a student’s area of difficulty and address it directly. Students have different learning styles, it easy for me teach in a variety of styles so that to make sure my students understands. I do also apply almost everything I teach to real world situations, for example most young students may think that learning about triangles will not benefit his/her career in business. I love teaching, and I have experience working with varied age levels and learning levels. As a private tutor, I have also worked with many students who have varying learning disabilities, and I have used my knowledge to help develop techniques that help them learn too. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to express complex information to diverse groups of people in an understandable way. Everyone thinks a little differently and learns differently too. I practice patience and enthusiasm with my students. I work independently with my students to find out what type of learner they are. I create a friendly rapore with my students and use constructive criticism. Teaching through theory doesn't work with every student, so I often find ways to incorporate my students' interests into their learning. I believe that learning should be fun, so I always try to make my students laugh and en ... read more
