I am a very energetic and interactive teacher, moving around the classroom, challenging students with questions, providing many examples and anecdotes to illustrate teaching points. I always try to teach inductively--leading the student to discover the answer on their own, and I encourage them to express their own original thoughts. I received a BS degree in chemistry and a minor in applied biology. My original thought was to attend medical school (I even took the MCAT), but decided to persue a PhD in inorganic chemistry instead. I have extensive experience in working with students. As a tutor, I was encouraging, supportive and sensitive to my students' feelings. For example, I normally met my students at the library. One student kept missing his initial session. I figured out that he was too intimidated by the library itself to meet me there. So, we had regular lessons in the park, where he felt comfortable and was therefore receptive to learning. Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I have worked with all levels of students, from special needs elementary to AP high school courses, and in both urban and suburban districts.
