My comments on tutoring Math : I've taught 3rd to 5th grade math for 4 years.

I've taught Special Education for 6 years (K-5th grade). Prior to working in public schools, I worked as a cognitive skills trainer. This meant that I helped individuals improve their reasoning/logic skills, memory skills, and attention skills. Cognitive skills are what make you a sharp (or dull) person.

Real world experience with academic background here to help.

Upon leaving University I went into sales and marketing management for a couple of years. A career change occurred as I entered the realm of land surveying and mapping. I was an exemplary student athlete and attended university on multiple athletic and academic scholarships. I have been responsible for teaching over 80 employees either surveying, trigonometry, geometry or math and computation basics. I also headed up staffs of 10-70 employees while in my management role. I have a passion for teaching others but never wanted it to be my career. I truly believe that the world improves only through those who seek to improve and help others succeed.

More About This Tutor...

I teach in a variety of ways. I know that teachers generally teach one specific method, and not all students comprehend this one method that teachers teach. It's about what the student understands best and helping them utilize what is easiest for them to work with.
I tutor my classmates who were challenged by the courses that we were studying. Often times they could not afford paying tutoring prices at offered at school. I dislike seeing students struggle and continuously repeat courses and not improve. Classes cost finances and students are not refunded for courses they did not pass. I want to accomplish more than helping classmates succeed when I know there are many other students and children who could use help, guidance, and assistance with class subjects.

Modeling Math is the Key to Students Learning Math

I teach 7th grade remedial and general math. I work students at risk of not passing, and I work very hard to break down math concepts. I believe it is so important to find a way to make each student understand a concept. I do not teach "just one way", but find the method that turns my students'lightbulb on. Before this position I taught middle school math to students with learning disabilities at the same school. A new principal after watching me teach, moved all my 7th grade students and had me take over the regular math position working with all struggling students.
I utilize teacher modeling first, slowly with detailed steps, then use guided learning so the student participates, until they can do the concept independently. If the student does not understand the concept I will approach it using a different method. I want all students to feel successful at math.

A Little Bit About Me...

Because of my degree in speech-language pathology, I realize that difficulties in learning often have to do with poor language development. My training allows me to take a full linguistic approach in tutoring, therefore, closing gaps and helping my struggling students to succeed in the classroom. I am able to work with the classroom teacher in bringing all disciplines together. As the student succeeds in the tutoring setting, his self-esteem increases and ultimately his classroom performance improves.
I can offer your company a wide range of experience. I have worked as a speech-language pathologist in two different Texas public school districts, as a home-school administrator, and as a core teacher in the private-school setting. I have taught middle-school language arts and mathematics. With my degree and experience in special needs and learning differences, I served as supervisor ... read more

The major benefit of a one-on-one tutoring environment is that a student can be taught in the manner which best suits their personal learning style. I believe it is imperative to identify a student's preferred learning style and to adapt my teaching accordingly. When working with a student, I prefer to allow the student to work through a problem and discover the answers themselves, while I guide and instruct them, instead of merely showing them. While grades and test scores are obviously important, it is my main goal to increase a student's confidence in a subject. With confidence comes ease and familiarity, and an ability to apply knowledge critically. I hope that the skills I teach my students will aid them in all their endeavors.
As my degree shows, I have a very well-rounded academic background. My collective eighteen years of studying language has instilled in me a deep ... read more
