I have always wanted to teach. While in high school, I spent half of my school day being a teacher's assistance at an elementary school. I started my college experience at Adams State College in the Education department. During my initial years in college, I completed multiple teaching courses including: Intro to Education, Teaching Exceptional Students in a Regular Classroom, and Child Development. I changed degrees to broaden my opportunities but never lost my desire to teach. I enjoy teaching secondary and college mathematics courses. I find great satisfaction working with students who are struggling (I have had my own struggles). I am always eager to allow students to learn by discovery. Using real-life examples that relate to things students are interested in is a very effective way of permanently seating concepts in their minds. It also makes math a little more fun and the repetition a little more tolerable.
After receiving an undergraduate degree (physics and math) and a graduate degree (teaching secondary mathematics), I taught secondary math for several years. I then returned to school (PPCC) to study Computer Aided Drafting (CAD). I eventually became the CAD instructor, as well as teaching developmental math, college algebra, and Microsoft Office. As a classroom teacher I quickly learned to engage each student individually. I prefer tutoring because I can tailor my instruction to a specific student. Children have different learning styles so it is my responsibility as the instructor to adapt lessons to maximize learning for each child. Ideally I am able to guide a student to realize concepts in their own terms rather then dictate facts to them.
I recently completed two years of teaching Physical Science in a secondary school in Namibia as a Peace Corps volunteer. Prior to that I earned a BS in Computer Science which included a mathematics minor and courses in physics and chemistry.
