A Little Bit About Me...

I hold a variety of Montana teaching edorsements: K-12 Library, 5-12 English, Broadfield Social Sciences (5-12), K-12 Physical Education and Health, and History (5-12). Over the last seventeen years I have primarily taught Language Arts and history classes at the junior high and high school level in a variety of Montana school districts and in one in Nevada. I have also been an assistant and head junior high and high school football, wrestling, and track and field coach.
I believe in having all my students understand that hard work and perseverance will help them achieve passing scores in my classes while exhibiting good moral conduct and behavior. A Little Bit About Me...

I have educated both college and middle school students, and through these experiences I learned that the key to effectively teaching others is patience. I guide my students but do not do the work for them. Most students have the ability to learn the material being instructed to them. By being patient, I give the students the opportunity to problem solve on their own, which ultimately builds confidence. With more confidence, students seem to learn better. I believe this is the key to mastering any academic subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I believe that reading is the basic building block to education. When students struggle with reading, it spreads through all subjects. Students who struggle with reading usually need a non-family member to help guide them, and they need to feel success. Without a taste of success, a student will most likely resent reading in any way.
I have taught high school English for seven years. I currently hold a Master's in Reading which qualifies me to teach K-12 reading. My bachelor's degree is in English with an endorsement in Speech Communication.

I taught debate and public speaking at Carroll College from 2000 until 2002 and briefly assisted the University of Montana debate program during the 2003 academic year. Both positions required hands on instruction in the basics of rhetorical theory as well as extensive research and writing. A good instuctor is able to separate theory from practice (in any academic discipline) and reassemble them so the student has a broad understanding of both components. I am a firm believer in reading comprehension as a precondition for student success and endeavor to impress upon students the need to continually expand one's knowledge base through reading.

There are many ways for children to learn, and the most effective method that I have used is to establish a basic foundation and then build upon that. My five year old son, Paul, is already reading and writing becuase I have worked patiently with him for the last few years. Simple rewards like a 'high five' may seem silly, but any type of positive reinforcement helps to keep attention focused on the work at hand, and makes children enjoy what they are doing.
