Reluctant & Struggling Readers can become Good Readers!

I worked for 12 years as a Special Education teacher in the public school system, teaching students with ADD, learning disabilities, autism, Aspergers, emotional and behavior disorders, and mild intellectual disabilities in a resource room and inclusion setting. I am able to quickly make significant connections with the students, building the good rapport that is essential to achieving a good working relationship. I especially enjoy working with reluctant and struggling readers, and nothing makes me happier than to see them overcome the obstacles that have kept them from success.

I graduated high school in 2008. I then attended West Ga Tech., for over a year. I majored in technical communications and took numerous computer classes. I love computers and Math. Those are my two favorite subjects but I am pretty well rounded, there's not much I can't do. I'm very self motivated and enjoy helping people better themselves. I work full time right now as a staffing agent, helping people get jobs. I'm only 22 recently out of college so most of the school subjects are still fresh in my memory.

I have had a lot of experience in several Georgia school systems. I have taught, student taught, and substituted. I have done long term substituting a couple times. I have tutored several students. I studied education at Columbus State University. I have experience in elementary, middle, and high school. I have the most experience at the elementary and middle school levels though.

Math is one of my top subjects!

I am currently a college student majoring in early childhood education. Previously, I attended culinary school. I graduated my high school in the top 5% of my class with a 4.0 GPA. I love to help others, and I have been tutoring and helping my three younger sisters throughout school for several years. I believe in hands-on type learning, as well as visual and activity-based studying. Making learning fun is definitely my preferred style of tutoring. I also can help proofread papers/ check homework/ etc.

I enjoy watching students learn!!

I have taught second, third, fourth, and fifth grade. I was a teacher for 9 years. I just recently decided to resign from my teaching position to stay at home with my four year old son. I am enjoying my time with him. I am teaching him all the wonderful things that I didn't think I was going to be able to. I do miss teaching and watching my students learn.

I have excelled in mathematics going all the way back to elementary school. Studied general mathematics in college. Have tutored at least 20 students on a variety of subjects in math, outside of school involvement. Worked in the math tutor lab at CSU during enrollment. I have tutored students in middle school and below on general subjects also (i.e science, social studies, english, etc).
I am a huge advocate of learning 'why' something happens vs 'how' it happens. In mathematics, anyone can learn a formula, an expression, or an equation if they look at it enough times, but they would not know how to apply it in real life situations. However, if a students learns the application of the formula and how it works, bigger chances they will remember it or can derive it when recalling the information. Learning the 'why' WILL lead to learning the 'how'

A Little Bit About Me...

My philosophy of discipline is simple: observe, take data and find the function of the behavior. When a student misbehaves in class there is an underlying reason. Every behavior has a function. The function can be to gain access to an item or person, to avoid doing the work or aggressive behaviors if they do not understand the assignment completely, medicine or personal affects (hungry, sleepy or thirsty). I also believe in “brain breaks”. My students take a break every hour to get up, walk around, listen to music and get the wiggles out. By doing this one simple trick, they are able to concentrate better and have an opportunity to get the wiggles out. I also have “my time versus your time”. Meaning “my time” is a time for the students to learn or pay attention while I am teaching. “Your time is your play time. If my time gets taken away then your time is taken away. It is a ... read more

I have recently recieved a BS in Biology from Fort Valley State University in May 2010. I am a graduate of an accelerated program called the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program, which is a program that focuses only on the math and science fields and also required me to earn my BS in 3 years while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or above. In addition, I have worked as a childcare provider during the summers at a daycare center where I was required to help create and carry out lesson plans to ensure that the children did not lose what they had learned during the school year.
I believe that in order the hlp children learn, patience is required. I am willing to take my time and make sure that of the concepts are truly learned and not just memorized. During my years in college I have learned that if something is just memorized it will not stick with you, but if you really learn and unders ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

What I have learned working with students is that many do not learn in the same manner. I beleive in what is called top process learning. Given the student a concept and allowing them to explore the possibilities of how one arrives at such a concept has allowed deeper critical thinking and strategic planning. However, this method is not predominately taught in Georgia education system. I have found this method to be very effective. The other method is patience. Students who strugge with their academic learning usually are having other areas of difficulty which may be social learning. Having clinical training allows me to make a more accurate assessment.
During the last 10 years I have worked with all levels of students, preschool through college levels. These areas include reading, math, english, psychology, science and social studies. I am a self starter and have worked wi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a BA in Language Arts, but also hold a passion for math as well. I have excellent reading and writing skills, and am familiar with the Georgia CRCT testing. I have had experience teaching all subject areas to first grade students for four years, and have also taught prekindergarten for eight months.
I enjoy helping all children achieve their academic goals. I realize that all children learn differently and that in order to help them, you have to figure out which style works for them. I truly believe that hands on is the way to go if possible. I also believe that with the right tools, every child can reach their goal.

More About This Tutor...

I have always had an avid love of learning. I attempt to make my students love it too. I try to incorporate things the students like into the lessons (for example, I used football scoring to explain mathematic concepts to a 10 year old boy). I also am a firm believer that mistakes are part of the learning process; if you are able to see where you went wrong and fix it, you have succeeded in understanding the material.
All throughout my school years, I was a highly motivated student. I was in the accelerated programs from first grade to my senior year in high school. During high school I was not only in the accelerated english program, I also took many Advanced Placement classes and was on the accelerated math track. I was even able to finish my bachelor degree in International Affairs in three years. During my senior year in high school, I tutored my student in all of his subjects ... read more

In high school, I was the typical overachiever. I played varsity baseball, led many school organizations, and was at the top of my class. School, especially math subjects, came easy to me, but that is not the case with everyone. Therefore, I wanted to find a way to help students in these areas. During sophomore year, I was approached by high school administration to tutor students, on a one-on-one basis after school, on math subjects. It was an amazing opportunity because only four students out of the entire student body were picked for this highly-selective position. I enjoyed it so much that I continued doing so until I graduated from the high school 3 years later.
After tutoring students for a combined four years now, I have learned very quickly that each student is different. Some require more of a hands-on approach, while others work best independently. I prefer to get an unde ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My style of teaching involves discussion, reading, writing, and hands on. if possible. I strive to get my students to feel comfortable which I find brings out creative thinking. I have experience teaching students with slow or difficult learning abilities and students with handicaps such as blind or deaf. My department dean saw my abilities in working with special needs students and placed the students in my classes. I believe one-on-one teaching builds trust with students and relaxes them. I motivate students by installing a positive outlook in the students mind. While in the USN, I and was selected by the Admiral of the Naval War College as the Command Career Counselor where I guided enlisted sailors in their naval career.
I strived to achieve the maximum while earning my degrees because I understand the importance of education. I possess a BS in Information technology and a MBA ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am very flexible in my teaching style and have helped students who learn in very different ways. While I was working with the Reading by the River program I worked with four different students each of which learned in very different ways. From this I learned at a very early time in my life that it is crucial to cater to each individual students needs. I personally have a more analytical mind and analytical learning style however I have learned how to explain technical aspects of accounting in a variety of ways.
When I was in 7th and 8th grade I participated in America Reads where I helped teach elementary children how to read. In college I assisted with my church youth group and led classes approximately once a month for two years. During 2010 I volunteered with a Kindergarten class. I assisted the students with in-class assignments in writing and math. I hold a bachelors degr ... read more
