A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has always been a part of my life. My mother was constantly teaching me, along with my siblings and the twenty other children that ran in and out of our home. I believe strongly in a teaching method that provides encouragement and positivism; one that highlights the good before pointing out the mistakes. My goal is to listen to the child and hear what his or her needs are and where he or she is struggling, and then to actively tackle one issue at a time through creative and interactive activities, problem-solving, and constructive criticism. I believe in children, their innocence, their carefree energy and endless intelligent ideas and innovations. My ultimate goal in life is to make a difference, and children are a great place to start!

A Little Bit About Me...

While I have no direct experience teaching in a classroom or one on one setting, I have been a mentor for over 8 years. As a mentor I have worked with young ladies between the ages of 11-20. I have assisted in helping them to learn memorization, public speaking, planning and fulfilling commitments. What I have learned from this when working one on one is that each child has a different way of thinking and learning. When you take the time to determine the best way to teach a child you can easily find the best way to teach and the child can learn anything as well as being more willing to learn and reach their full potential.

I have experience in the commercial field teaching adult computer applications. I also taught literacy to adults.
I have found that drill is the best method to learn. After reading, writing, and arithmetic, I have added two more R's; review it and repeat it. I realize that this method needs to be individually applied according to the student's needs.

I like my students and we seem to have a good connection. I will not preach. I was a public speaker for three years and know many techniques to communicate a message, without putting your audience to sleep. Practice makes excellence; therefore, repetition is a good learning technique. I believe every child has a capacity to excel, some may just need a little dedication. I have a good sense of humor and I incorporate that into my teaching. I am very patient, friendly, and considerate.
My mother was a teacher for 33 years. Many summers she worked as a tutor and all through high-school and college I helped her. I graded student's papers, read with them, and helped with their homework. When I was in college, I tutored students in Spanish and English as a second language. I am patient while helping others and never give up on anyone. I enjoy bringing a friendly attitude and a sense of comfort to my teaching style. I believe repetition is key to a person's learning and development. It gives me great satisfaction to help someone accomplish their goals.
I have always had good math skills. Throughout high school and college I have taken plenty of courses in accelerated alegebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, etc. I earned an economics degree with a statistics and math minor at Northwestern University. I also had some brief tutoring experience in high school math. Lastly, I have just moved to the Las Vegas area and wish to devote my time to the community's education.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a Senior Financial Analyst for the past 4 years at CityCenter. Throughout my term, I have learned a variety of management skills, time management, organizational skills, and methods to help motivate and encourage our staff. Through out highschool, college, and my current job, mathematics and numbers has come easy to me. I love problem solving and finding ways to attack problems, and achieve goals.
Through out my term in the educational system, I realized early on that students need a variety of teaching methods and ways of interacting to be able to retain and achieve their goals. Children will and always will be our future. I love working with children and having the opportunity to inspire and motivate through hardwork and dedication. I am very easy going, patient, goal oriented, and driven.

The way I teach is very simple. I explain my teaching style using the analogy of a mother bird teaching her baby how to fly. The mother guides her baby, teaching it, showing it the ropes of life, and when it comes time, the baby flies off on its own with no help. This is quite similar to how I teach and tutor children. I guide them through lesson plans and homework with a helping hand, and when it comes time for them to "fly," I let them go and hopefully they will understand the concept and be able to work individually. When this happens, it is truly an inspiring moment, to be there and watch children grow.
Even before I graduated from NDNU with my teaching credential in English and social studies, I have tutored for several years in almost every subject. I have come to understand that each individual has his/her own unique way of learning.
