Teaching has always been a part of my life. My mother was constantly teaching me, along with my siblings and the twenty other children that ran in and out of our home. I believe strongly in a teaching method that provides encouragement and positivism; one that highlights the good before pointing out the mistakes. While I have no direct experience teaching in a classroom or one on one setting, I have been a mentor for over 8 years. As a mentor I have worked with young ladies between the ages of 11-20. I have assisted in helping them to learn memorization, public speaking, planning and fulfilling commitments. What I have learned from this when working one on one is that each child has a different way of thinking and learning. The way I teach is very simple. I explain my teaching style using the analogy of a mother bird teaching her baby how to fly. The mother guides her baby, teaching it, showing it the ropes of life, and when it comes time, the baby flies off on its own with no help. This is quite similar to how I teach and tutor children. I guide them through lesson plans and homework with a helping hand, and when it comes time for them to "fly," I let them go and hopefully they will understand the concept and be able to work individually. When this happens, it is truly an inspiring moment, to be there and watch children grow.
Even before I graduated from NDNU with my teaching credential in English and social studies, I have tutored for several years in almost every subject. I have come to understand that each individual has his/her own unique way of learning.
