Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I am an American Sign Language Interpreting major graduating this spring with my degree from an Interpreter Training Program. I will also have my License through the Ohio Department of Education after graduation to interpret in schools grades K-12. I am hearing impaired, deaf in my left ear, and have been taking ASL for ten years since losing my hearing.

I have been taking ASL classes for High School and College since losing my hearing in my left ear ten years ago. I enjoy helping individuals learn American Sign Language, and will be graduating with my ASL Interpreting degree this Spring. I have completed all of the ASL Language classes required for my degree.

I use American Sign Language dictionaries and the internet while also showing the student how to use American Sign Language myself.
I have been teaching myself American Sign Language for a little over 2 years. I am fluent, and willing to teach anyone who wants to learn. I don't know anyone who is deaf. I became interested in American Sign Language while watching a TV show on ABC Family called Switched At Birth. The show encouraged me to learn, and I hope I can encourage someone else to learn as well. I don't charge much because I don't have a lot of experience with teaching/tutoring, but give me a chance and i will make it worth it. I cannot teach baby sign language only regular sign language. that is my only preference.

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to tutoring is to try to be as hands-off as possible. By this I mean that I will not "fix" papers, nor will I write directly on a student's paper if it can be helped. I want to help the student in their problem areas by showing them examples of an area (thesis statement, grammar, citations)that needs improvement and then working with them so that they will know how to address the problem in the future. I also find that often tutors do their best work while acting as "sounding-boards" for their students; listening to the student (as each student has different needs)and then offering suggestions and ideas on how to approach difficulties.

It is my firm belief that if students have the confidence in themselves to believe they can do well, they will succeed. I believe that there is just not one way to teach because there are many different learning style. Teachers must identify their students' learning styles and find ways to incorporate them into the lesson. I agree with Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Some students are auditory learners, while some are visual. Some students are bodily-kinesthetic learners, while some are naturalists. Other students may be interpersonal or intrapersonal learners.
