My teaching style is very interactive, as I believe that a student learns more quickly and retains more if he/she is actively involved. Therefore I work together with the student through the assigned task, giving independent study when needed. Some example tasks may include reading aloud together, reading silently followed by opportunity for comprehension through a question-answer session, and choices of writing tasks to reflect on reading. I try to understand the student's current needs or reading/writing level and help them to excel from that point.
I have taught high school and middle school English, as well as one year of teaching at an alternative school. I am a 60-year old man who has taught every subject at every grade level as an artist in the schools for over 35 years. I currently substitute in all the grades in Hart County so I have had to demonstrate knowledge of every subject at every grade level. I have been in the classrooms of public schools every day for about 60% of my adult life. I hold a Bachelor's Degree from Oberlin College with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Math. I have tutored a lot over the years, and whereas I am comfortable handling any subject, my particular strong point is Math. The key to being a good teacher is being patient. I believe children learn best in a positive and stress-free environment. When a child does good on the work then I praise them and if they make a mistake then I explain to them the error in the homework.
