More About This Tutor...

I have taught high school and middle school English, as well as one year of teaching at an alternative school. Additional experience would include substitute teaching, Boys and Girls Club instruction, being a Girl Scout leader, and Sunday school instruction. I also have some experience as a homebound teacher and tutor. I am currently working on my Master's Degree in English Literature at WKU and substitute teaching.
My teaching style is very interactive, as I believe that a student learns more quickly and retains more if he/she is actively involved. Therefore I work together with the student through the assigned task, giving independent study when needed. Some example tasks may include reading aloud together, reading silently followed by opportunity for comprehension through a question-answer session, and choices of writing tasks to reflect on reading. More About This Tutor...

I am a 60-year old man who has taught every subject at every grade level as an artist in the schools for over 35 years. I currently substitute in all the grades in Hart County so I have had to demonstrate knowledge of every subject at every grade level. I have been in the classrooms of public schools every day for about 60% of my adult life. I hold a Bachelor's Degree from Oberlin College with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Math. I have tutored a lot over the years, and whereas I am comfortable handling any subject, my particular strong point is Math. I am able to find the way that students can understand the principles being learned (and this way is different for each student).
I believe each student can learn and it’s my responsibility to find how each one learns best. So much of it is about instilling confidence in the student that he or she is intelligent and ca ... read more

My approach to teaching others is a holistic one. I believe each students learns at his or her own pace, based on individual interest levels. As the parent of Montessori students for many years, I believe each student must be motivated and given opportunities to develop his or her interests from direction provided by a mentor or instructor, then be given the freedom to advance the knowledge base. I think it is a teacher's job to help each student achieve their potential by providing a positive learning experience which also involves the parent.
As an editor, writer and avid reader for my entire life, I have reading comprehension and editing skills that would be valuable in helping others. I have 15 years of experience as a journalist, editor, freelance writer and higher education development writer. In my postion with Hearst Business Media, I spent a little over a year working w ... read more
