A Little Bit About Me...

No person learns identically to anyone else, therefore I approach pupils from their learning styles. I engage them, finding out what methods have worked and get a quick generalized understanding of how they learn. I challenge students to their frustration level (Piaget) and modify the situation to ensure success with clear possibilities to expand and learn more and in different ways. Most of the teaching I do involves hearing, visual, kinetic simultaneously ensuring maximum retention.
I achieved my BS in 3.5 years with certifications in Kindergarten and English for secondary education. I have employed multiple skills to teach many disciplines to students. I enjoy tutoring those who are in Middle School or High school. I feel as though they tend to have a higher capacity for sustaining attention. Those are unique ages that can really build a foundation for later education. I believe that one-on-one time is essential in learning. Some people might learn well in a large group, but others learn much better when time is spent on explaing specific details. I find the most enjoyment when a tutee finally links the core concept and is able to solve more difficult problems on their own.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a Kindergarten Endorsement, M.A.E. degree, and a Master of Arts degree in Special Education with minors in the following: Learning Disabilities, Mildly Mentally Handicapped, Seriously Emotionally Handicapped. I have taught at the elementary level in both general education classes and special education classes and at the high school level in special education classes.

I began homeschooling my children in 1993. My older son was in 8th grade, my younger son was in 4th grade, my oldest daughter was in Kindergarten, and my twin daughters were 2 years old. My older son graduated with 2 bachelor degrees after spending a year in France as an English teacher in a high school. My younger son graduated with a double degree and a minor. Both are currently in grad school. My oldest daughter will be returning to school next year after a 2-year leave. My twin daughters will begin college in the fall. Homeschooling has enabled me to keep abreast of current learning as well. I have tutored 3 students in the last year, all three in algebra and the one student in geometry, too.
