As an Education Director at a Boys & Girls Club, I taught in the non-traditional sense, through after school literature-enhancing programming of various kinds. In 2002 I went back to school to earn my bachelor's degree so I could continue on with my Masters. Two years later I graduated with my Master's of Education in Counseling. A situation came into play at the school and I was asked to "fill-in" for a 7th grade Language Art Teacher. She never returned and I taught the classes from October until the end of the school year. My initial approach is to ascertain exactly where the student stands prior to starting any course work. Students can be and are easily frustrated with work that is either beyond their ability or more advanced. Frustration can be either eliminated or reduced when students have a better understanding of their work. When teaching Math, my experiences have also taught me that younger students are very hands on and tend to absorb concepts quicker when they are able to manipulate objects enabling them to better understand the concrete.
