I believe the best way to learn is by working one on one and then taking the lessons learned and working out problems with out a tutor present and then bringing back the problems that caused a struggle. Even better is working in a group of peers and then checking in with a tutor weekly so that the student and tutor can zero in on what the sticking points were that week.
I have been teaching and tutoring mathematics since the age of 15. I started working at a tutoring center where the student's ages ranged from 4-15. My comments on tutoring Algebra : I am a certified secondary math teacher in Kentucky with a professional degree (ABD) in curriculum and instruction with an emphases in mathematics education and assessment. I have 16 years of high school teaching experience and taught Algebra 1 several times over those years. I also served as math department chair, a mentor teacher, and primary curriculum writer. I was blessed with several awards, including Teacher of the Year, Excellence in Education(from Emerson Electric) and the Loeb Award (from St. Louis Science Center for excellence in math/science education).

After 16 years of high school classroom teaching experience in Missouri, I decided to pursue my doctorate in education at UK. I'm currently a student at PLD Highschool and have taken all the classes listed that I'm tutoring for. Math is something I love to do on my free time and I know the basics, and beyond in some areas. My comments on tutoring Algebra : I am in the process of working on my teaching degree to become a math or English teacher. I love teaching math!

I am a junior at EKU working toward my Bachelor of Science. Education major with concentrations in Math and English. I have tutored my mom in basic college math as well as statistics, and her grades have definitely improved. Because I went through the accelerated program I understand the need of hands on activities and alternative learning styles. I bring these into my teaching. I also am a firm believer that doing a lot of problems is the best way to get good at a subject, especially math.
I am a high school senior and have been tutoring peers since middle school. Experienced Tutor with Expertise in Math and Social Science
