Give Real life experience a try

Experience throughout school, work and personal experience dealing with the mentally challenged and dyslexia. my best friend had a son who was dyslexic and also he had ADD and I got him to trust me in babysitting and I taught him various things. I taught him how to read and write he could not accomplish that on his own. He was 11 at the time and I think with kids you have to be creative to teach them and I am very creative. I also have an aunt who is mentally handicapped, and I love spending time with her she is a very giving person. They teach me and it is always a joy to work with them and give something back.

A Little Bit About Me...

I started teaching chess at an elementary school in 2002, and continued there until 2006. While there I gained an appreciation for the power and joy of working with youth. I graduated in 2007 with a BS in Mathematics Education, and I have been teaching in the classroom for the last two years. While in college I began tutoring mathematics, and I have now been tutoring for the last six years - I have enjoyed every moment of it!
I believe all students can learn mathematics. I see it to be my responsibility as a teacher to accommodate individual learning needs and to continue trying new approaches until the student has understood the material. As a college student, I understand the difficulties and frustrations that arise from feeling ignorant at times. It is important to me, when I teach, that my student feels reassured when he or she does not understand something. First, I explain principles on a level that I initially judge to be adequate for the student. Then, if the student does not understand, I come up with a more simplified explanation, and continue in this fashion until the concept is grasped. I believe that the basis of learning is understanding the principles of the subject. If a student has a thorough knowledge of the basics, then he does not need to rely on root memorization or luck to pass classes. I believe teaching and learning the basics are far easier than simply attempting to pass a test or earn a decent grade. All subjects in the end build upon each other, a strong foundation helps not only with the current class, but with all future classes as well. I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.

My teaching style varies depending on the type of students I am teaching to because I believe that each student has a particular learning style that they find easier. I think that it is important to find the types of learning that each student finds easiest to understand, and tailor the course so that it works well with their particular learning abilities. This can easily be done in a classroom setting as well as an individual basis. In either case, while I am teaching I think that it is important to understand the topic we are on before moving to the next one.
