I am a currently a working civil engineer specializing in bridge design (steel and concrete structures). I received scores of 760 in Math on both the SAT I and II, and a score of 800 in Math on the GRE's. I have taken several high level calculus, engineering mathematics, and statistics classes at the University of Delaware, aside from receiving a 5 on both the Calculus and the Statistics AP Exams. I have tutored elementary students in the past, and was part of a 'teaching scientists' after school company briefly in college. I believe in talking through problems using visual ideas and simplified concepts. I prefer teaching with graphics and concepts, and then relating them to formulas and equations. While I expect hard work from my students, I also have the patience to help them understand at their own pace.

Apart from continuing my education to the MA level in mathematics, I worked as a civil engineer for 20 years, doing water construction projects. This work gave me much experience in jobs where calculation accuracy is critical. When not working, I tutored and continue to tutor in the neighborhood library. Algebra is a strong area for me. Further, I have traveled to France, Spain, Turkey and Egypt where my language skills have increased, and ability to communicated has been enhanced. I start with a word problem, since this is the type that most often challenges students. I review the language used, and translate that into equations. I start with sums, then subtraction, multiplication then division. As the students sees me go through several examples, I then give them similar problems. In a short time they experience the success for themselves, and tackle problems theretofore difficult.

When a student is challenged with a physics problem, they feel overwhelmed because they do not understand how to approach the problem.
