My comments on tutoring Math : I am a 28-year veteran teacher who recently retired. I tutor students in reading. language arts and math. I use the Right Start Math Intervention program which includes numerous manipulatives and games making it highly visual, engaging and fun for all ages.

I have 28 years of teaching experience, a master's degree, and am Rank 1 certified in reading, language arts, and math. I have experience with one-on-one online and in-person tutoring and small group intervention. In addition, I have two children with dyslexia and ADHD, so I am experienced, both as a parent and teacher, with special needs students and the educational complications for students and families.

I love teaching and seeing students understand.

I have taught Elementary Education in Ohio for 30 years. I taught GED for Garrard County for 10 years.I have always enjoyed working with students who do not understand their subjects, especially in Math. Most of my teaching experience has been in classrooms with students from the toddler stage through 6th grade. My favorite areas to teach are phonics, reading, and elementary math. However, in the passed five years I have tutored pre-school age through adults in many areas, and homeschooled all areas in elementary and middle school. I also taught English as a second language. I love guiding a student through some difficult or misunderstood content and getting the "ahha!" of understanding at the end.
My experience has taught me that all children can learn, but often in different ways. Finding the mode of learning for each student is the key. I try to find different ways to present the information until the child understands. It is also important to review and practice in order to reach the learning goal. I begin by establishing rapport with the student, and usually I prefer a lighthearted, encouraging style of interaction. I believe every student is capable of learning, but may not have been shown the strategies and skills that will best suit them. I like to help the student identify their learning style, and then teach using strategies that will coincide with that learning style. My teaching style varies depending on the age and needs of the student. When I worked with younger children, I often made up a game to help the children learn the material while having fun. Even with older children I tried to make learning interactive and suit their personality. I also varied the amount and type of aid given based on the student’s needs. While I do think learning should be suited to the individual, I do require that the student focus entirely on studying during the tutoring session.
