The Student Comes First

I allow my teaching style to mold itself to each individual student, finding methods of communicating the information that best suit the learning style of my student. I favor a holistic approach to learning, believing that education should be of the whole person. If a student learns how a skill in his tutoring session can be applied in real life, then his or her perception of the subject may fundamentally improve.

As I graduated from college with my California State Teaching Credential,I was able to teach 2nd grade for the Los Angeles City School District for three years. During that time I sought to gain as much experience and expertise as possible to prepare me for teaching in a school for missionary children overseas. I studied Spanish intensively for a year in Mexico preparing me to work in Santiago, Chile where I taught first and second grade for almost 40 years. I am fluent in Spanish and have taught English as as second language.
I have enjoyed very much working with children and I know that every student has his own learning style and my teaching must be adapted to them. I am patient, even with children who do not speak fluent English and I seek to encourage them to seek success. I believe a phonics approach to reading can help children learn to read quickly and confidently. I ... read more

I love working with children. I believe that all children are capable of learning if they are given the opportunity. I believe that students learn best in a hands on engaging enviornment where they can put the skills they have learned to use. I feel that by providing an opportunity for a child to reach their full potential, and showing them the patience and encouragement they deserve, every child will succeed and lead the world into a brighter tomorrow.

A Little Bit About Me...

My favorite approach is to take it slow. I find that to teach a student a specific field of knowledge there is almost always a hindering block that cannot be seen at first glance. For instance, a student who is having trouble with division of decimal numbers may not realize that the whole issue stems from his lack of understanding of the multiplication tables. Allowing the student to show you what he or she knows and watching the student attempt the problem step-by-step will reveal this hidden block. Once this hidden block is taken care of, the information will flow easily and naturally.
Throughout my education I have always prided myself in being an excellent student. Although this extended to all my subjects, my most passionate courses have always been in mathematics. This has been true from elementary all the way through college. Once in high school, I began tutoring students in ... read more

As a teacher, I think student active participation is critical to learning. I also believe that the use of questions is important to determine whether the students are benefiting from the learning experience and to determine what needs to be done to make the experience even better. My style also involves the use of real examples and illustrations to help them understand theoretical concepts better. I am an enthusiastic teacher and believe in animated and lively teaching. My enthusiasm always serves as a motivating factor for students.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a microbiology student, I have taken rigorous courses in the sciences as well as math. The laboratory classes that accompany the science classes also provided first hand knowledge and the ability to write research papers and lab reports. This along with my passion for chemistry let me to take a position at the University of Florida Teaching Center. I first started teaching as a math tutor but then I was moved to a chemistry position. I have also held a tutor position when I was a peer mentor to students in an introductory chemistry class.
