My comments on tutoring Science : Through 2nd year High School

I use the Socratic method, meeting the students where they are, and using gentle questioning to build on that base. I start with the assumption that all children are gifted learners, and communicate that belief to them. It is essential to create a base of success upon which to build future success. I also spend time finding something to like deeply about each child; and discovering what the child is interested in. When an adult takes an interest in the child's world, and shares that interest in a positive reinforcing manner, it opens to door to learning.

Over the past year I have tutored through The College of Idaho's Chemistry Club. Chemistry, especially the math portions, never came easily to me. I had to work hard and spend hours asking professors questions, but now I am much better at chemistry because of it. As a tutor I wanted to help fellow students who were struggling as I had.
Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. Since I married a military officer, we moved often, so I had a chance to do substitute teaching at all grade levels and all subjects.
