I have worked with children and teens all my life. I was a camp counselor at a YMCA camp for 6 summers in my teens and early 20s. I taught 5th grade my first year (class of 36 students!) and then taught 3rd grade for a year, 2nd grade for three years, and 4th grade for three years--all in public schools. Then I taught English at the middle school level for four years in a private school. After that I subbed and tutored for a year until I was hired to teach in a K-8 building at the 8th grade level. I taught there for nearly 20 years before I retired, teaching science, pre-algebra, and communication arts (English, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and spelling.) While in that position, I was the sponsor of the science fair, building-wide, for nearly ten years. Since retirement, I have subbed, tutored, have written and published a book, and am writing a daily blog.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Phonics : Certified IL Teacher

I like to teach the student, which means I tailor lessons/activities and supplemental materials to the student. The goal is to see where the student, where the student needs to be, and find the road that will merge the two in the most beneficial way for the student.
As a certified teacher, I have several hundred hours in a classroom with field experience and student teaching. My comments on tutoring Elementary Phonics : Having taught young children in grades K-3 reading for many years, phonics is a necessary tool for children to learn in order to read well. Most schools do not teach this vital concept anymore, but when a child does not know a word on sight, they must have some tools in order to figure it out o their own using the letter sounds, etc.

I am a retired elementary school teacher and taught for over 15 years in the St. Louis area public/private schools. I taught mainly in grades K-5, but do have Kindergarten and Preschool experience as well.
