Math, Science & Microsoft Excel tutor

I have two technical-college degrees, I worked my way through both of them being a math tutor, and have used math and science in some way in every job I've ever held. As for my "teaching style", as everyone knows, it helps enormously just to have another person to work with, ask questions of, and generally talk things through. And since Im not a professional teacher, Im mostly a working tech--maybe I can help you see the connections between the abstract science & math the way its taught in school, and how that knowledge actually applies in the workplace (and in life.)
On-the-job math is almost always done using Microsoft Excel, so I can show you how to do almost anything on a spreadsheet. Ive been a TV broadcast engineer, and taught video production in a public high school. Ive been an avionics technician, a solar PV installer & designer, and a thermal analyst for solar buildings. ... read more

When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. It is especially important to understand the concepts behind the subject matter when planning continue in a similar learning subject.

I am an experienced classroom teacher and have been involved in education since I was 18 years old. I have worked supervising general chemistry teaching labs as well as an organic chemistry TA. I followed this experience by gaining my general education certification through the STEM program at UNM. This involved a year of teaching as an intern at a local middle school. My philosophy of education envisions learners that construct meaning by engaging in various and authentic experiences that are provided within and outside of the classroom. In order to prepare them for future educational and vocational endeavors, students will explore a multidisciplinary elementary curriculum that utilizes their various learning styles. This exploration will occur within an educational environment that will be framed on high expectations for behavior as well as academic performance.

A Little Bit About Me...

Part of my sucess in life is because I place a high value on personal entergrity and represent both my employer and myself in an ethical respectable manner. Added to my diligence of focusing on the students education I will bring years of traveling and life experiences to my teaching assignments. I believe that before an educator is able to teach, you must first discover the needs of the students and then program the material to fit those needs. I like to teach to the senses and bring more than just a text book to my lesson plans and make them fun and exciting.
After graduating from High School I attended the University of Utah for 1 year. After that year I was drafted into the US Marine Corps and my education was put on hold as I served my country and raised a family. After all of my children graduated from college I returned to finish my studies. This past year I have worked a ... read more

I earned a BS in Business (CIS) with a cumulative 3.4 GPA and membership in two National Honor Societies. Courses included Chemistry, many Social Studies classes, and calculus-based Chem Physics. Briefly I taught Science and Math at a private high school in Albuquerque and did well, but quit because of a medical problem with my leg. After active duty in the Navy, I earned 8 credit hours in English through the CLEP test, and didn't take Freshman English. I had always made straight 'A's in English, and had excellent grammar. My courses included Writing Poetry & Fiction, Shakespeare, Business Communications, and Technical Writing; also Latin, Spanish, and German (which increased my knowledge and awareness of grammatical structure)
I have done much sales and customer service work, as well as teaching. I think listening is key, recognizing the humanity in each person, and rela ... read more

More About This Tutor...

After completing my degree in 2007 at the University of New Mexico, I moved to Denver, CO and taught for one year at Morey Middle School. Since the school is only 5 blocks from the Capitol building and a multitude of museums and libraries, I was able to tutor a few students from the school in a real-world environment. I have a secondary endorsement in mathematics, and my 24+ credit hours in science allow me to teach general science in Colorado. I am moving to Albuquerque in a couple weeks, where I have accepted a position at Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School, a very exciting new liberal arts charter school in the heart of the city.
I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the stud ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Thanks to my education in psychology at Brown University, I have gleaned much wisdom about the workings of human behavior as well as the human psyche. I have been able to observe applications of what I've learned throughout my daily life. This is especially helpful in teaching; I can recognize the various personalities and the accompanying learning styles in the students, which enable me to be able to appropriately adjust how I present the material. Since I was 17, I've been tutoring and teaching a broad range of ages, from young tykes, to professionals, to retirees.
Teaching is one of my great passions. I thoroughly enjoy overcoming the initial hurdles as the children are hesitant to receive me as a teacher, and to see them open up to me. It's also thrilling to see them blossom as they absorb new information and incorporate it. I'm certainly an advocate of fostering intellig ... read more

The combination of a Master's Degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and an undergraduate major in Psychology and minors in Biology and Chemistry along with many years of research experience in biology provide me with a well rounded background in math and science. My specific tutoring experiences began as an undergraduate where I tutored other students in courses I had completed such as: general chemistry, organic chemistry, genetics, general biology and psychology. I enjoy all of the science topics and like tutoring others, it is very rewarding. My experience teaching began after I attained my bachelor's degree. I taught mathematics for a couple of years in veterans upward bound given at the University of Massachusetts to veterans returning to college.
