I believe in personal interaction with students – making them write, making them read – going over every detail, looking at the issues (grammar, punctuation, syntax, coherent structure (logic, unity, transitions, parallelism,)) and then re-writing and re-reading. The key to doing well in English is understanding basic structure and making it become second nature when writing. Through personal interaction, the process can be simplified by working hands on with each sentence and paragraph. A student learns best when he/she actually reads and writes and has someone to work with on the structure – through a workshop type approach – writing and re-writing. I am an August 2009 graduate of the Adult Education/ESL program at the University of Alabama—Birmingham. I chose to study adult ESOL because I believed it would complement my undergraduate academic background in International Studies, and I have never been disappointed. Since the summer of 2006, I have served as an ESL instructor in a free class for adult learners at Shelton State Community College.
